What were ur stats?
4.18 GPA, 34 ACT, top 10% of class, and lots of extracurriculars related to my major. I’m from MA
My stats are so crap compared to those praying i get in
Super high grades and test scores are no indicator of future success or happiness. So all of you who are putting yourselves down, believe that you are starting a new chapter in your lives no matter where you go to college. Emotional well being, ability to build and foster healthy relationships, and yes hard work, are the recipes for success and happiness.
Yeah…what’s with these ridiculousy high stats. Why aren’t these people shooting for the ivy leagues rather than amherst? Amherst is typically a safety school at my school so i’m confused.
Parents/kids tired of huge college debt/bills, hence the rise of all decent state schools. My oldest kid did not have super high high school grades, went to umass and ended up in honors and ran lots of prestigious clubs in Isenberg and ultimately got an amazing job. So again, his high school GPA meant nothing in the whole scheme of things. You are all so stressed out and it is your parents (myself included), and your high schools’ fault. Am not slamming these very talented kids who at an early point in their lives seem to be able to juggle school work, EC’s, and other activities. Just saying that with good effort and the other “right stuff” I mentioned, you will all get to the same place in life eventually…so try to enjoy the ride along the way.
I didn’t mean to make anyone feel bad and I apologize if I did. Literally everyone at my school applies to Amherst and I applied there because of a program they have with the vet school. But seriously though the people who have posted above me are completely right; grades and test scores don’t tell the whole story at all.
my two friends (we are on long island) got mail, one in engineering honors one just business, and i have yet to receive anything. My mom says it might be because we have a PO box and for the common app i put my home address and it takes a day or two to forward to the box. But going to check tmrw. so nervous
In 2013 for sure, and I heard in 2014 as well, it took UMass 4 weeks to get their EA offers out. They have been increasingly swamped every year, and also are drooling over the growing number of super high qualified applicants…therefore they are taking their time re decision-making. They, like all schools, are also focused on their “yield”, and there is some strategy in that. Not to mention the riches of accepting out of state students who pay a much larger tuition bill than here in MA. Will say my D was accepted to a top non-MA state school…much tougher than Umass Amherst to get into…and a likely factor was the lure of out of state tuition for that state school. So we all need to sit tight and get some sleep!
I was accepted with merit yesterday into the mathematics major
GPA: 3.71 through junior year (4.1 so far in senior year)
SAT: 2100/2400, 1430/1600 (800 M 630 CR 670 W)
Hoping to graduate with 5 AP credits (school doesn’t offer a crazy amount)
Go to a parochial high school in CT
@md2997 @ziggerpig - totally agree that HS stats will mean nothing in all of six months.
The answer about “why are you applying to UMA-Amh” is that no one knows in October how the lottery school thing will pan out. Everyone needs some likelies, so kids who live in MA (and perhaps elsewhere) see UMA as a strong option with an Honors College if desired, in a pretty area. For us, it is also driving distance so would cut down on those costs/logistics.
It is wise for even the “most-qualified” (and I use that term loosely because I don’t think stats are the be-all of life) students to pick one or more less-selective universities, hopefully those with EA or rolling notification, because deferrals and rejections happen with randomness and frequency!
A lot of the so called more prestigious colleges are early decision and they are expensive, so some students do not want to get locked in not knowing what the financial award will be, these schools are also super competitive for Admission only 7% to 24% get in, and most applicants have over a weighted 4.0 GPA and 2100 on the SAT, strong EC’s, everyone looks the same, this is were if you play a Varsity Sport, or Band, can offer diversity of self or region it can help get you in, having a Legacy parent doesn’t hurt either. Many of these Students who got in with these super stats will not end up going to UMass, but I am sure they are relieved to have the Honors College as an option that they do not have to commit to until May1st.
“one or more less selective”? What in the world gives you the idea that UMass Amherst is “less-selective”? Far from it, in fact it’s become extremely competitive over the past 5 years: https://www.umass.edu/newsoffice/article/fifth-straight-year-umass-amherst-welcomes
@laxdaddy from the article you linked, admission was 58% overall and 70% EA. I count that as less selective than HYPSM.
Did anyone get their decision via email?
Super frustrating waiting to hear especially since some of my friends have started to hear I got deferred from Northeastern so I’m really hoping for an acceptance before winter break! I’m from MA, 4.0 weighted GPA, 2080 superscored SAT, 3 APS this year including double science, strong ECs including a town-appointed task force against discrimination. No update on spire, no email, or mail yet. Congrats to everyone who got accepted and good luck to everyone still waiting
I haven’t heard back yet either. 32 ACT/91 GPA from MA. I’m getting a little worried tbh :-/
Good luck to everyone else still waiting and congrats to those who have gotten in!
Ah, I see, comparatively with those schools it surely is such. Thanks for clarifying.
Many from MA (solid students from various towns) have not heard yet. Breathe.
Thank you! My son is convinced he is the only one!
