UMass Amherst Class of 2020 Decision Thread

I’m sorry too @fieldhockeyxoxo ! Those are great grades and you should be proud. It just goes to show you what a business this is and there is no rhyme or reason or a money related one for sure! Good Luck at UNH!

@fieldhockeyxoxo , Sorry to hear that. Did you find out by mail or through Spire? And UNH is an excellent school

Thanks everyone for your nice messages. I found out through snail mail. The letter was dated Jan 8. After meeting with my guidance counselor today, I realized I was missing a math course in my senior year as well as a course in US History, which apparently is a requirement for admissions to UMass. I am excited though that I got into UNH and I’m sure all of this worked out for the better.

@fieldhockeyxoxo, WOW- your high school counselor should’ve made sure you had what you needed and were on track back in your Sophomore year or at least Junior year. Not a worry, as you will have a fabulous experience at UNH, but it’s a good lesson for life to know that NO ONE ELSE cares as much as you do about YOU, and that you cannot count on others to do what they are supposed to do. You have to be responsible for all the details/requirements yourself. Wish it were not that way, but it is…whether applying to college, for a job, a mortgage, etc. Even when a plumber shows up at your house you have to be very very clear about what you need and babysit the details. Move on to UNH and BE FABULOUS! I went to a state school, and made my own way in technology and make a very high income. I hope you have fun at college, study, make great connections, and make sure to be willing to take summer internships doing even the lowest level of things within the field you want to pursue. Keep a strong network of professional contacts going on LinkedIn- that’s the place you will find jobs and be recruited for jobs from once you start posting your internship experiences. Join the professional groups for your field on LinkedIn. The job market is even more competitive than the college market- this has all been a good experience for you. PEACE

@becautious Thank you so much, your message really means a lot!

@becautious Great post! We all can learn a lot from your post.

Nothing came today. They said it will now take until the end of January. Very frustrating. If it is a no, I wish they would have sent that out already.

Has anyone been deferred?

Finally received my acceptance today after lots of waiting…

2250 SAT (1520/ 1600), 4.55/5 gpa, lots of leadership ECs, 5 AP classes (scored a 5 for U.S. history and 5 for Studio Art), both parents attended, brother currently attends, in state. For whatever reason, I did not get into the honors college and will no longer be considering UMass.

To my earlier point - how is it possible that it took Umass that long to admit a 2250/4.55 triple legacy student and then to NOT admit to Honors? They just lost another amazing student. Time to reconsider this crazy process?

@fieldhockeyxoxo, Congratulations on your acceptance to UNH. It’s a great school and I would have been happy to have any of my kids attend there. Alas, 2 were accepted but elected to go elsewhere. I am sure you will do great things there.

Agreed In addition to my earlier post, my S is a sophomore there and I am a grad as well. Ver concerning that my D didn’t get into the Honors College and received no scholarship. BTW the NESCAC schools she is going to will be cheaper than UMass because we received a lot of FA

I applied as an EA at Umass. They said that EA applicants would be notified by jan 15…but still no update. I dont know whats going on…I have other decisions to make, other acceptances to consider too…all of this is getting delayed becuase of umass’s pending decision…highly frustrated…is anyone else facing the same problem…

@bilal11 I know how you feel. I’m looking to enter college as a nursing major, and I know those seats fill up fast, so it’s definitely something that’s worrying me.

@JamieH I understand you…majority of people who applied to Umass are not satisfied I believe when it comes to notifying applicants about decisions. Even if I email them all they say is “we received 17,000 EA and working as soon as possible to send out decisions”. I dont care how much applications they received. All I know is my decision should have come by now. I applied way before their deadlines because I got done with EACH AND EVERY requirement they had…I deserve more than this

Hope you get into your desired major anyways.

Thanks @bilal11 good luck to you too. Hopefully we hear back soon.

@bilal11 I know it’s frustrating, but if we look at it in a different way, isn’t it good that they are taking a bit longer if they got so many applicants? They could just go quickly by making their decisions based on test score and straight gradepoint alone (heck, a computer could do 17,000 based on scores/grades in seconds), or they could take a few weeks longer and fulfill their commitment to make decisions holistically by taking the time to consider ALL that you bring to the table. Remember that these are human beings making life changing decisions for the applicants, and although frustrating, I’m glad they are trying to do a good job. I am sure they are just as anxious to get it done, working long days to do so, etc. You DO deserve more because you did everything you were supposed to do, but in life even when you do your part so well, often others do not, or extenuating circumstances prevent them from doing so. All we can do in life is do OUR part well…a lot of the rest is simply out of our control, and can take a little luck. This is why having a plan B and plan C is good. Good for you for doing your part. You will hear soon and all shall be well no matter what happens.

I still haven’t heard either. Does anyone have an updated ETA for UMass? I’m also getting very frustrated. @bilal11 , I too was really early-- I submitted my app on October 14th. What is going on?? Does anyone else have any more information, or are we all still 100% in the dark?

@Leyla98 According to @wishfulmomma a few pages back, they said it would now be the end of the month. I agree communication could be better. Sounds like they are overwhelmed. The process of going through 17,000 applications must not be first in first out.
