i talked to admin office again. There will be more acceptances going out through the end of the week. Spire will be updated, on a case by case situation- and you will prob. get an email. Sounds like there is no ryme or reason. or at least they wont give their reasoning.
@eggsbenedict13 thank you, means a lot!
gpa: 3.67 unweighted
sat: 2140 (710: math, 720: writing, 710: critical reading)
sat II: bio: 800, physics: 670
hope this helps!! good luck everyone!!!
Did you take Honors/AP? EC’s?
and what major did you apply for?
I can’t believe you didn’t get in @cleeeeeeeeeee those are some great stats! You should be proud! What a business this has become!
I still haven’t heard anything from spire or snail mail today!
@becautious Yeah I am in the same kind of area! I have been accepted to multiple other places but I applied to UMass undeclared major and haven’t heard back. Hoping to get my letter either this week or next week. If I get accepted I will for certain attend.
I received nothing in snail mail and spire is not updated…
@cleeeeeeeeeee , Those are phenomenal stats. I am surprised they didn’t accept you. My stats are worse than yours so I am afraid I may get declined/deferred.
Got Email today: Deferred.
Stats:
3.05 GPA
1840 SAT
Strong EC’s
Honestly, I was expecting a rejection letter.
Deferred
Major: Undeclared
GPA: 3.4W (pretty extreme upward trend-- 2.8 freshman year, 3.4 sophomore year, 3.8 junior year, looking at about a 4.4 or higher for senior year but that’s not final yet). My school doesn’t calculate UW but that’s probably close to 3.2?
ACT: 33
APs: didn’t start taking any until senior year, but I am currently enrolled in AP Psych, AP Environmental Science and AP Art History. Making A’s in all three.
Extracurriculars:
3 years in Mock Trial, 2 years in Art Club, 2 years in Book Club, 1 year in Clay Club, 2 years of volunteering at a dog rescue (100+ hours), religious education teacher’s aide (only about 10 hours), began working in August as a server/cashier
I heard through email just a few minutes ago. Not gonna lie, I was kinda blindsided by this. Two of my cousins go to UMass and they were accepted outright with similar GPA and lower test scores, and on my school’s Naviance scattergram I can see that my little circle is in a sea of green squares. I didn’t think I was a shoo-in or anything but I’m definitely surprised.
S just got rejection email…he was being recruited for absport and this weekend coqch told him he wasn’t getting an offer…he was only getting in with a hook…GPA 3.41 8 honors 2 AP…low sat
Just got an email from admissions, I got deferred.
Major: Computer Science
From: MA
GPA: 3.33
SAT: 1800
3 AP and all honors (except English)
EC: Soccer captain, baseball player, 2 years Destination Imagination, co founded my high school’s computer programming club, 3 years robotics, plenty community service, etc.
This entire process needs fixing. I know for a fact a number (many!!) of students who were accepted EA who have no intention of attending umass amherst. It wasn’t even a safety - it was a way of applying to as many schools as possible (because that’s just what you do) to having bragging rights of all their ea acceptances. Meanwhile it clogs up the system and leaves ea students who want umass as their #1 school - deferred! Now - to wait and pace, and check spire 1000 times and wonder and stress and hope with all our might that we get the acceptance - once the chosen few that never had any intention of attending turns umass down. And because the decision came out so late it forced me to stress, and worry, and pace and apply to other schools as I worried about my ea acceptance with umass. The process is not right and seems flawed at best.
My D was deferred tonight also. 3.2 gpa, several honors classes and a few college classes. Tons of EC.
It is a lot more competitive and popular this year. I’m glad it wasn’t a no. I guess this will resume in March
@charja I agree with everything you wrote. Don’t check your spire anymore though, if you were deferred they won’t give you an answer until the middle of April. Good Luck!
I was deferred today. 3.49 UW GPA 26 ACT Nursing Major. Several honors classes and a few college classes. Tons of EC.
My in-state Undeclared S got Deferred as well today. He received an email late this afternoon. He has an UW 3.2 at a very tough, honors based Charter School. He has stellar recommendation letters, has done two valuable internships, and has worked since age 15. He is National Honors Society, School Ambassador, started clubs as his school, etc. He had a 24 on the ACT which is the low end of what they like to see but the rigor of his school and other things should have been a yes. We applied on 10/1 because THEY asked at their preso that we all help them out by getting things in early. He has already been accepted at Ithaca College with $13k per year Merit money, UVM with $10k per year Merit money, Quinnipiac with $18k per year Merit money! These are all good schools who want him and are putting $ where their mouth is. Because all the high school counselors advise that you apply to a bunch of schools we applied to several in this GAME of college acceptances. We are waiting on UCONN, URI and Connecticut College. UCONN is his favorite but it is even harder to get into than UMASS Amherst. UCONN took only 49% of applicants last year and UMASS took 63%. This is all a game, and it is a shame. FL, Texas and California are very smart, long-term thinkers in that they want well-rounded, bright, enthusiastic, involved kids to STAY in their home states. It preserves their communities, families, and state economic success to have ‘your own’ stay with you, well welcoming others as well. UMASS, Northeastern, etc, make is so hard for in-state students that no wonder our state’s population is on a decline and states like FL and TX continue to grow. I am female, went to a state school, had barely a 3.0 to get in, low test scores and I make a six figure income that starts with a $3. because of my work ethic, and well-roundedness, not some test score from some test that has nothing to do with much of anything in the real world. ATTENTION KIDS- don’t let this process define you! UMASS Amherst would be LUCKY to have you! You obviously care a lot because you did what you were supposed to do in THEIR application process and YOU have followed through. THAT’s WHAT MATTERS in the REAL WORLD! Be yourself, be well-rounded, follow through on your word, follow the rules, and ANY company will be lucky to have you. I am a VP at a Technology company, TRUST ME that it is very hard to find workers with the aforementioned attributes. If you have those attributes you will go far- UMASS AMHERST or not. Wherever you go you will be fine! Once you get that 1st job no one gives a hoot where you went. I have people that work for me that went to Ivy League schools, state schools, overseas schools, small schools no one’s heard of. NOBODY CARES! IN the business world it’s about producing good work quickly and following through. GO GET 'EM EVERYONE! Get whatever internship you can in your industry, make excellent contacts while you are there, and connect with those contacts on LinkedIn. Keep the relationships going with those folks and they will hire you when you get out!
Sounds like sour grapes. UMass standards have risen significantly in the past few years to the point where it is a well respected research university with a better reputation than any of the school’s you mention. My son is a sophomore and had better stats and we still sweated him getting in. My D was accepted EA and has decided not to attend as she is going to a top rated NESCAC school in MA.
I applied to the school of Public Health at UMass Amherst on October 2nd and heard back today-- deferred! Definitely upset to say the least. UMass was my #1 school but now I guess I have to be realistic!
GPA UW 3.4 or 3.5-- weighted it was a 3.702
SAT superscore- 1710
From MA
1 AP class 5 Honors classes
Tons of extracurricular activities-- community service, capt of dance team, track runner, jobs etc
Sent in my T1 grades which were (weighted) above a 4.0 with my AP class
Definitely hoping to hear positive news in April, glad to know I’m not alone in this deferral!
