Just a reminder to all who were deferred- EA typically has much higher GPAs and test scores than regular and there is also only a certain amount of people that are able to be accepted EA.
Another thing in regards to people using UMass as just another school to apply to, you have to understand how it’s upsetting for others. I personally know that everyone in my school applies to UMass just because that’s the thing to do (because it’s known as a safety). However, I know most all of the kids that have gotten in have no intention on going to UMass. I understand that safety schools are needed for everyone, however it’s frustrating to people who had their heart set on this school when we’re deferred and are now extemely anxious so you have to understand that. UMass is my top school right now and being deferred I’m very upset considering all the other schools I have applied to have lower acceptance rates than UMass does, which makes me more anxious.
Anyways, best of luck to everyone!
Another thing, please don’t start saying the school made mistakes. They most definetely did not make a mistake and if they did for some odd reason, they’ll accept you regular. I’m upset and surprised too but don’t start blaming the school and calling admissions office with your deferral. Everyone seems to be around the same stats (those who got deferred) either a lower GPA and high SAT/ACT or high GPA and low SAT/ACT.
@Actor123 Very well said. Thank you for at least putting this opinion out there. We should be proud that Massachusetts such an academically advanced state, and that UMass Amherst is comparably competitive to colleges known for being so!
To the people who have been deferred, I’m sorry. It’s okay to be hurt and sad. It’s totally understandable. There are only so many slots for an amazing amount of highly-qualified applicants. It’s not personal, and it doesn’t mean anything bad about you.
Vilifying the admissions department may feel better in the short-term, but it isn’t fair to them.
Best wishes to all. The process always works out in the end.
My daughter received her acceptance letter today through snail mail. Her SPIRE account has not been updated. She was accepted to the Isenberg School of Management. Weighted GPA is 4.37, all honors classes with 5 APs, 1760 super score SAT. She was very worried because of her low SAT. Acceptance letter was dated Jan 19th. Envelope postmarked on Jan 21st.
Life is good:)
@nikeluv There COULD be a mistake, especially when dealing with thousands and thousands of apps. And Umass would not want to lose out on a top candidate if they did make a mistake. One recent poster’s son had a 3.7 GPA and a 34 ACT. Neither are low.
@2018eastorwest That was a 3.7 WEIGHTED GPA and a 34 act …for Computer Science…CS is more competitive than some other degrees
@2018eastorwest of course there’s always a chance of anything however, schools do not just throw out the rest of applications because they’re running out of time. Another thing to note is that GPA and SAT/ACT is not everything. It could do with extra curriculars, classes, etc. 3.7 weighted is also below average for UMass so maybe they’re waiting for regular. I just don’t think people should be blaming things on the schools admission process.
@nikeluv calling to make sure that there was not a mistake is not “blaming” anyone. Everyone makes mistakes. And weighted or not, @9241libom, those stats still seem high for a deferral, compared to what others have posted. In any case, it doesn’t hurt to call and ask. No one said that they were “throwing our the rest of the applications.” However, given that they are already weeks behind their own released schedule, they could be operating under pressure and doing things differently than usual.
@2018eastorwest okay! I never really said that and people have been saying that (in other threads and also at school) I was never directing this towards anyone specific!
While seeing the other kids, whose both gpa and SAT/ACT scores are lower than my son, were accepted by uMass Computer Science, I think it is a good idea to call them to check in case they received wrong documents… Thanks @2018eastorwest.
I think everyone’s just doing their best to understand the process since it was different than stated. I dont think anyone means to be good or bad, we are all just conversing and comparing thoughts/info. That said it is what it is. My S got accepted today to Penn State main campus with $15k per year Merit each year… I don’t know a lot about it, but It is rated #14 for Publics according US News, UCONN is #19 according to the same source, and UMass AM is tied at #29 with a few others like U Delaware per same source. That doesn’t matter, it’s literally just context if you don’t know much about a given school, and again we dont know much bout Penn State and he wasn’t even really strongly considering it, but it’s supposedly a well respected Public school and a decent merit offer. He loves UCONN, it’s #1in his particular heart, and they tell you by March 1st according to what they state and backed up by College Confidential comments from last year, so if he gets in there he will be psyched. And I promise if admitted to UConn he will do the good doobie thing of telling Umass he is going to UConn at that time so that he can be removed from Deferred pile on 3/1 and free up one consideration spot for one of you fine students. All shall be well. Best of luck everyone!
Deferred… 3.8 weighted, 35 ACT. (Superscore.)
Are these deferrals happening through mail, email, or SPIRE? Thanks!
I got mine through email @BananaEater
uhm so I still haven’t heard yet so thats awesome…
@BananaEater I received my deferral through e-mail.
How could they not take a 3.8 and a 35 ACT @hedreq ? That score is near impossible. Doesn’t make sense. I would call on that one. With scores like that why are you even applying to UMASS? Reach higher!!! You got lost in the shuffle with this one. Are you in state? Apply to Northeastern, UCONN Maryland Delaware!!! Those are impressive scores!
Thanks…
It will all work out anyway.
