Hi there, I recently applied to the Umass Amherst School of Computer Science and I’m a bit worried about hearing back. Umass Amherst is currently my top choice as I am really impressed with their computer science program. Here’s a quick rundown of what I’ve done in school.
GPA: 3.5W
Current Math Level: Pre-Calculus
Grades have increased from freshman to senior year (weighted):
Freshman: 84, Sophomore: 86, Junior: 90, Senior: 103
ACT Score: 26
Taken AP Computer Science (received a 97 unweighted)
Taken 2 dual enrollment classes at Umass Lowell (one of them was a 200 level C++ Programming class, received a 4.0 as a grade in both)
Captain of Robotics Team
Member of cable club
Member of drama club
Leader in ADL club
Submitted a portfolio of work I’ve done with comp sci (apps, websites, etc)
I’m mainly concerned about the math portion of the admissions process. I definitely think my experience in the “comp sci education realm” holds up throughout my application but my math classes haven’t been exceptional. They say that a strong background in math is really important but mine isn’t too hot.
Also, my brother was a recent graduate from Umass Amherst if that makes a difference.
Thanks for your time! I know it’s always tricky to estimate something like this, but I’m just trying to get some estimation before March rolls around.
