UMass-Amherst or UConn for CS

I have been admitted to both UMass-Amherst and UConn for Computer Science major. I know that CS at UMass has a higher ranking but UConn has much of a higher overall ranking. And it is hard for me to decide. Please can I have some advices and information on the environment of the two colleges.

Are you in-state for either one? If so, go to that one. The schools are close enough that the extra OOS cost adds very little extra value.

Im international and am not considering the cost at the moment

I think the Amherst area is a much better college town than Storrs. There are many other colleges (5see the college consortium) and cool towns nearby (Northampton). And I don’t think there is that much difference between them academically.

I admit to being biased though, since I live in MA and DS attends UMass.

Look at the financial aspect of it. I also got accepted to both schools, but financially UMass is better. Considering I’m in state haha. But I love UConn and I would’ve gone there if they gave me more financial aid. Honestly, if you have the money to go to UConn and you really like it go. But they are basically the same schools.

Thanks a lot. For now UMass seems to be a better choice. I will do some more research.

My son is interested in CS and was also accepted at UMass. We went through all the rankings (USNews, NRC, London Times, Princeton Review) and UConn was never on our radar. We visited the CS department at UMass and were suitably impressed, after a lackluster tour of the rest of the university. Still deciding between UMass (with merit scholarship) vs. Rutgers (in-state). The campus life and college town is a plus for UMass, independent of the strength of the CS department.

My S is a freshman at UMass doing engineering. He also applied and was accepted at UConn. The UConn campus is nicer than UMass, but there is not much else in Storrs, CT besides UConn. As noted above, Amherst is a great college town, and the UMass campus is nicer than its reputation and has more open space than UConn.
