Hi, My daughter got admission into UMASS SBS exploratory track, when her application was directed towards CS or Computer engineer. She is out of state student. She was super excited when she saw the acceptance with 10K but later when she looked more carefully she saw the SBS exploratory track.
She is taking AP CS and AP CAL AB in 12th grade. So wondering what are her chances to get into CS from SBS exploratory track. She enjoys programming and been doing quite well in her AP CS class. Any help would be appreciated!
She’ll need to take Computer Science 187 and MATH 131 (Calculus) (or, if she does well on the Calc AP Exam, she can move on to Calc 132) so she can apply to the major. If she doesn’t have the pre-reqs for CS 187, she’ll need to take those first. You can see what those are here: https://www.cics.umass.edu/content/spring-19-course-descriptions
She should shoot for around a 3.5 GPA when she applies to the major, to give her a very good shot at getting into it. She can talk to her advisor to find out what the average GPA was of people who got into the major from inside UMass last year, so she can get a very current update and figure out her chances.
If UMass didn’t think she had a shot at getting into this major, they wouldn’t have admitted her at all, to be honest. So they think she has a shot.
Thanks for the insight folks. My Son got in UMass COE. He needs to take the same credits as mentioned above but he has most of the APs already taken in his High School. Is there a cap on the number of students at UMass for CS every year ?
