Umass Amherst vs. Umass Dartmouth

Future CS.Eng/CS/Math major

Financially UMass Dartmouth will be 8k cheaper than UMass Amherst.

I see that UMass Amherst outranks UMass Dartmouth, but is it really worth the extra 8k? Does it matter since their both state schools? I have over a 4 gpa (did not do well first term but im fine now). I did not receive CommColl invite from Amherst, but honors from Dartmouth. I also should have about 10-15 credits worth due to AP tests.

I'm looking for opinions on which school I should attend. (I was accepted to other schools but low chance of attending due to lack of aid received.)

Will the 8k more be a real struggle?

UMA Engineering is quite highly rated–it’s a major research U. From what I’ve read, Comm College is not all it’s cracked up to be.

Do you plan on grad school? I think right out of undergrad, you’d have a better shot at employment from UMA–grad sc

Could you possibly do a yr or two at UMD and then transfer to UMA??? UMD engineering is not as highly ranked as UMLowell.

My son is currently deciding between UMA, UML (free ride) and Northeastern. We will be visiting on Sat for Engineering open house.

My husband went to UMA for grad school in CSE and works at a major co. They hire grads from MIT, RPI, WPI, UMA… UML and UMD…not so much.

Hope this helps and good luck with your decision.

I think Amherst is the strictly better choice. The math, engineering, and CS departments are some of the best in the country. I know the UMass CS department is quite highly ranked, top 10 I believe, for Artificial Intelligence.

If the 8k is a real problem, go to UMD and try to transfer, though I do believe Amherst is worth the extra money since it far and away outranks UMD with regards to those fields.

If you haven’t seen that already, you should definitely have a look.

Isn’t there a program where you can transfer to other UMass schools? You could do a semester at UMD and then trans. to UMA. I will be going to UMA and I absolutely loved it. I think UMA is the best choice.

“My husband went to UMA for grad school in CSE and works at a major co. They hire grads from MIT, RPI, WPI, UMA… UML and UMD…not so much.”

I’m working for a pretty big company and the division is led by a UMass Dartmouth alum. My guess is that UMass Dartmouth has parity with UMass Amherst in engineering.

UMA is definitely higher-ranked.

But after your first job, no one will really care. And getting your first job will depend as much, if not more, on how you did, what projects you worked on, what internships you did, etc. And you have a lot of control over those aspects.

OK, I just checked the web sites - UMA is $23,167/year, UMD is $22,255, which is only $900/year difference. Where did you get the $8K number from?

I’m not sure, but the $8K probably comes from room and board deductions if the guy would commute to UMass Dartmouth, but not to UMass Amherst.

All I know is that my supervisor went to UMass Dartmouth and my coworker went to Harvey Mudd. I went to a place that’s roughly in between those two as far as reputation is concerned. If you’re good, it doesn’t really matter where you go. Just be good.
