I have narrowed down my college list to Umass and Umiami Ohio and I am having trouble deciding. Both are relatively the same cost. I have no set major and a broad spectrum of interests. Any thoughts?
Just one person’s opinion (from Massachusetts; numerous family members thru UMass) . . . Unless there is a particular need/interest that would bring you to UMass, their reputations, resources, campus, etc. are not close. Miami of Ohio is one of the top public universities in the nation. UMass is a solid school where one can do well - but will be very hard to stand out come grad school application or job search. Congrats on your choices.
Miami Ohio is definitely a better university than UMass. If both are the same cost, then Miami OH all the way.
Remember that many college graduates pursue careers that are not related to their majors. That’s not to say the decision isn’t an important one, only that choosing one major does not close the door on all other options later down the road.
If you want a practical major but you are not sure which one, look for universities with lots of preprofessional majors—and programs to help you explore them.
Other considerations are obviously geography…getting to and from Miami is a PITA, Oxford is in the middle of nowhere. UMass-A has good bus and train service, airports are probably similar distance as Miami but you won’t have trouble getting an Uber/Lyft/airport van at Amherst.
The demographics are different, with UMass having a lot more racial diversity.
I assume one is stronger than the other in certain programs…Miami has a reputable business school, for instance.
