My DS20 has been accepted to UMass in the school of Behavioral and Social Sciences for Econ. with a decent merit scholarship. He has also been accepted to Rutgers Business School and SAS for Econ. However, merit decisions haven’t come out yet at Rutgers, and we are not as confident that he will receive merit there. He’s not 100% sure whether he wants Econ or Business at this point, but as he makes his decision, we decided to research the process for applying to xfer to Isenberg from another school within Umass, so that he has an understanding of what’s expected in that process. We feel like knowing whether he has a shot or not would be important to understand as he makes his decision.
We are wondering if anyone has any practical insight to share. If you or your student has been through the process of trying to xfer into Isenberg internally, what were your circumstances and did it work out?
Should add we are OOS for both. Thanks in advance!
@CTCape We were just there for accepted students day for Isenberg. The school told us to transfer in one would need a 3.8 GPA and even then it is not with 100% certainty. Good luck with your choices.
Thanks for this. We were there as well. And found it very informative. We got conflicting info. An admissions rep told us that a B average was necessary in the “predictor” courses, and a student on one of the panels said you needed a 4.0. What was clear was that it was no sure thing and not to bank on it. DS has some decisions to make for sure.
@CTCape this info was from Rose Hill who is an academic advisor within Isenburg, not a student if that helps. Good luck - we are in same boat with decisions - especially when it comes to comparing FA and merit $ from school to school.
For anyone with this same question, I thought I would update where DS is in this decision process. He recently found out via the admissions FAQ page (https://www.umass.edu/admissions/admitted/admitted-student-faq) that admitted students who want to change their major can request this in writing by emailing admissions. They review these requests in early April. While it’s no guarantee, it seemed worth making the request since the decision will be made prior to May 1. If he were to be accepted, even to the Business Exploratory Track, I think UMass would rise to the top.
Final update for future applicants: DS found out today that his major request to Isenberg was approved. He’s over the moon and has made his choice–going to UMass!
