Umass Amherst

How does UMASS Amherst rank compared with other publics in the area? Such as SUNY Geneseo, TCNJ, UCONN, UVM, UNH, URI,

Not unfavorably

TCNJ and Geneseo have pretty good reputations.

generally the new england state schools are viewed as:

UConn

UVM

UMass/URI/UNH

UConn is far superior to UMass. UMass is more on the level of UVM.

TCNJ vs. UMASS? I'm in state in Mass, but as far as they're both publics and pretty cheap money's not a huge issue. I really don't like UConn so much just because it's so big, though I'd overlook the size problem because mass I'm in state. Which of those two degrees would do more for me...? (political science most likely my major)

College of NJ is WAYYYYYYYbetter then U mass, check the stats...highly competitive, beautiful campus, much more difficult

id say UMass is better than U Conn.

UMass better than UConn?!.....what are you smoking?....

UMASS I would say is slightly below UVM in terms of academics. While I dont like the size, I do love teh town (afterall I am going to Amherst), However, in texas, UCONNs rep is no better than UMASS - and it mamy even be a lil worse - however UVMs is better - and SUNY geneso - worse that the other 3

How is TCNJ's rep in the rest of the country?

Well living in MA, I'd have to say that I'm surprised to hear people say UConn is far superior to UMass and UVM. Around where I live at least I'd generally say people rank the schools in the order of UVM, UConn, UMass, with UConn and UMass being a lot closer than UVM which is given a good deal of respect.

haha..... UVM over UConn?! Please do not go around saying that to anybody.... they will think you're nuts...... UConn is #67 in US News and UVM is #88.... UConn is on a whole other level!

Here's how UMass ranks in terms of peer assessment (name recognition/prestige) to the other schools

UMass (3.3 Peer Assessment)
UConn (3.2)
Vermont (3.1)
New Hampshire (2.9)
Rhode Island (2.8)

I would say there is little difference between UMass and all the schools listed. All have a northeastern reputation, those outside the northeast likely wouldn't know anything specific about the schools.

As for Geneseo and TCNJ, those are considered LACs, which is on a whole different set of evaluators and guidelines, these numbers typically can't compare with the National University numbers.

SUNY Geneseo (3.5) - LAC rating
The College of New Jersey (3.5) - LAC rating

geneseo worse than the other three? are you kidding? geneseo is the most selective of the sunys and has a great reputation.

Not 1 person said Geneseo was the worst. It is categorized as a LAC therefore it's hard to compare with a National University. Hence grouping it with other LACs, away from the National Universities.

A2Wolves6: You've left out a New England state. :}

No I didn't, the OP asked for specific schools, and I gave information on the schools listed.

lol UMass and UConn are not even in the same league.....UConn is by far the best of the publics in New England.

I wouldn't say any of the U's are a whole lot more respected than the others. They are all decent schools. UVM, UNH, UMass, UConn, URI... unless you're an alum of one of them, I think you could just go with whichever campus you like better and whichever one is stronger in your particular major.
