Is Northeastern engineering worth $12k more per year than UMass Amherst? What are the differences besides co-op?
Where would the extra money be coming from? Loans or parents or? What’s the total cost/debt for each option?
UMass Amherst is a large suburban school with a classic campus. Northeastern is a compact urban school in the middle of Boston. There are other environment differences as well, mostly in the same vein.
UMass is known for its top dining options.
You’d find larger classes at UMass.
All loans…
Absolutely UMass then, it’s not worth over 50K more after interest for a peer school. I hope that’s not too much for UMass even - how much debt total is UMass?
UMass has the option of a co-op program…

If you choose UMass, you should try to take advantage of the 5 college consortium and cross enroll at Amherst College which is only a couple of miles away…
Engineering in Mass is not like other states. UMass Engineering is not as big as a typical state flagship because it is a small state and the original land grant charter was split between MIT (the Mechanic Arts) and UMass (Agriculture). This small size tends to work against it in the rankings, but it can be a feature if you are looking for a more managable size than the typical state flagship in other parts of the country…
I might jave missed one or two, but here are the relative sizes of the engineering programs in Mass:
Northeastern is the largest engineering program (667 graduates last year)
WPI is the second largest engineering program (632 grads)
MIT is the third largest (468 grads)
UMass Amherst is fourth (462 grads)
UMass Lowell is fifth (410 grads)
BU is sixth (377 grads)
Wentworth is seventh (196 grads)
Tufts (170 grads)
Western New England (117 grads)
Olin (78 grads)
Harvard (less than 76 - number includes distance learning)
Smith (33 grads)
Merrimack (27 grads)
For Comparison:
GTech (2141 grads)
Purdue (1548 grads)
Michigan (1252 grads)
You consider it a peer school? Are the academics comparable?
I think It’s a peer school for engineering
