UMBC or UMCP for Compsci?

I got a 6k scholarship to UMBC, and haven't heard from College Park yet, but I'm seriously considering going to UMBC because I've heard that the Computer Science curriculum is on-par with College Park's. Is there any truth to this?

Also, if any computer science students from either school see this, how are the internship opportunities, and how difficult / useful would you rate the computer science program?

Take the money and go to UMBC. I don’t think you will be getting any money from UMD unless you heard from them already. Is this 6k a year or is this 1,500 every year for a total of 6k? If is 1,500 a year go to your choice. If scholarship is 6k a year, go to UMBC. I tried adding the fees up for UMBC and found them to be slightly more expensive than UMCP. But the 6k will put a big dent in you COA and you will get a good education at both places.

Ok Thanks for the input, I know the money is a big factor, but I’d still like to hear from a computer science student at either school if anyone’s out there.

I do know a kid that is compsci student at UMBC. He just turned 19 and was finishing his BS and starting on his masters at UMBC the September before. He had a fantastic paying internship. Of course he was gifted and in demand. If you do well at UMBC, you will be rewarded.

My daughter is a freshman at UMBC majoring in comp sci. She was accepted at both UMBC and UMD (honors college). She received a $15,000/year scholarship at UMBC. She did not receive any money from UMD. The comp sci department at UMBC is much larger than the one at UMD. So far, she has been very happy with her choice of UMBC. There are many opportunities for internships. She knows 5 UMBC students who have interned during the summer at Google. In fact, she has been encouraged to apply for a Google internship next summer. This past summer, she had a paid internship at a local research facility. She will also have an opportunity to do research in artificial intelligence with her faculty mentor next year. Honestly, I don’t know how both comp sci programs compare as far as difficulty. UMBC has a great reputation in the Washington/Baltimore area with employers.

I hope this helps.

It certainly did umdclass, I had no idea that the compsci dept at UMBC was so good. Google internships? That’s amazing. You’ve really made me lean towards UMBC as my school of choice, thank you!

You’re welcome!
