UMBC vs Towson

With college apps just around the corner, I'm really beginning to worry about which college to choose. My parents aren't letting me go out of state (mostly because of money but also because they're paranoid), so I have to pick from colleges in Maryland.

At the moment, I'm trying to decide what would be a better fit for me: UMBC or Towson

The criteria I'm looking for is:
-program in communications/marketing/PR
-small(ish) classes
-diversity
-exciting social life

My one and only problem with Towson is that apperently there are many more girls there than guys...which...sucks.

My only problem with UMBC is their apperent lack of a "college campus" feel, and apperent lack of social life.

Help???

A few thoughts - apply to both. Towson has rolling admissions and UMBC offers early action. If you are accepted at both - then you can do more research and make a decision. If you are not accepted at both - problem solved! :)

Most colleges have more girls than guys for a variety of reasons - Towson is not unique in that regard.

I believe you will find more diversity and more “social life” fun at Towson for sure. UMBC is great academically - but the reputation is for students who are serious about science/pre-med and who go home on the weekends. UMBC is said to stand for “you must be Chinese” and I don’t mean that as anything derogatory - but you said you were looking for diversity.

Between the two - I think Towson sounds like a better fit for you - but I still recommend applying to both.

I looked at the UMBC website - and I am going to amend what I wrote a bit. There is more diversity than I thought:

and 75% of students live on campus - which is more than at Towson.

I guess living in MD - UMBC does not have a fun collegiate experience reputation - but perhaps that is changing.

Have you visited both?
