UMBC vs UMD College Park for Computer Engineering

Hey guys. I got accepted into both UMBC and UMD College Park for the Spring of 2010. I was wondering which school would give me a better degree for Computer Engineering. Obviously UMD is ranked higher in Engineering, but my main concern was after I complete my degree if it would be harder to get a good job with a UMBC degree in Computer Engineering opposed to one from UMD, or if it doesn't really make a big difference. I love both schools but it obviously comes down to which one I like more and which one will give me a better future. I appreciate all feedback.

Thanks.

Definitely UMCP. They offer a ton of opportunities for internships and research, which can lead to job offers. Plus, their engineering dept. is excellent. It’s not like you’re not going to get a job if you go to UMBC, but I believe that UMCP has more to offer and is more well-known throughout the country. Local companies would respect a degree from UMBC and would be familiar with it, but larger companies (ie: google, adobe, etc) most likely wouldn’t take someone who went to UMBC, versus UMCP.

Only if the employer(s), especially outside of MD/VA/DC REALLY make an effort to ask “which University of Maryland”. There are a LOT of graduates from the U-Michigan Flints, U-Michigan Dearborns and Penn State at Wherevers who are living off of downplaying the exact branch of a well-known university.

If this statement is true,

And the financial part is about the same b/w the two, and that you actually like the school yourself, I say UMCP.

This is really strong. But watch out this is computer engineering. Not computer science. As a computer engineering student, I find it a bit difficult to find a good one myself.
But if UMCP can really offer good internship (not just research), then I’d go there.

College Park. I live near a naval base. Many people I know have graduated from UMCP with a undergraduate, graduate, or even doctoral degree in some engineering discipline and have found themselves in very successful positions in civil service and with defense contractors. In addition, UMCP offers great research and internship opportunities.

By the way, you mentioned “Spring of 2010.” Hadn’t that time already passed when you wrote your post? Just wondering…

Oh I meant Spring of 2011, my fault haha. Thanks for the feedback guys. Anyone else?

I got accepted to both for computer engineering and chose to attend UMD-College Park. That said, UMBC is not a bad school and if you graduate from either school with decent grades you should not have a problem finding a job. Although I like College Park more, I think that you should really consider UMBC because you will be able to start in the fall.
