UMBC vs UMD College Park

Which one is better for social sciences?// better overall?

I understand that UMBC is trying to excel in the hard sciences. They’ve put scholarship money and resources into joint BS-MA programs (trying to encourage doctoral studies).

College Park…

yeahh i’ve been talking to someone who goes to umbc and she says that she chose UMBC over CP cause 1. she doesn’t have to see the same people from school for another 4 years, 2. she knew she wanted to major in Bio and UMBC is big on science

have you heard anything about the Humanities Scholars Program? cause I applied for that as well, but I’m not sure…I got into CP spring 2011 (a little disappointing.), but got into UMBC fall 2010…

Can you visit both schools on a weekday and get a feel for them? It would be worth missing a few hours of school to do it. Retention rates are better at CP. I would prefer CP, but some people like UMBC because it is smaller.

Just want to find out the latest pro and con of the two school

I know this thread has been inactive for a while, but this is for people coming here in 2013 wanting current info.

College Park still has the better rank. However, I go to a decent high school in MD and we have had 3 brilliant students in the past 4 years. All 3 of them picked UMBC (even over all of the ivy league schools they got into.) They’re all physics students.

It really does depend on what you are going for (umbc is a math and science school.) They are both really good universities, the 2 big differences are that umbc and university of maryland are an hour away (so if you are commuting there it depends on where you live.) And, the second is that university of maryland is an infamous party school whereas umbc is know to be a little nerdy. I did not include umbc being smaller than university of maryland as one of the big differences because umbc is still a big school; it has 10,000 students. Umbc is also know for sending bio students to harvard med and have the number 1 chess team. But, for most other things than science, I think university of maryland is better.

UMBC is getting better. The school is relatively small and there is lots of construction going on as they have added buildings. The Physics program is supposed to be amazing and they have an honors part to it that you can apply to as a Freshman. The location is not that great. You are close to some rougher neighborhoods, and not so much a college town because you have a lot of commuters. It has the feel (to me) of a large community college.

UMCP is definitely a college town. The campus is HUGE! The options for majors is wide. They are ranked higher and much more selective. There are some rough neighborhoods around, but not too close. You are very close to DC for internships and such. I believe UMCP is more diverse.

We have had many students recently choosing UMBC, but many have chosen it either for the Physics program or because they were not admitted to UMCP.

I would be happy to answer any specific questions you have. Two of my siblings went to UMBC and I went to UMCP along with the other 2 siblings. We also regularly go to both campuses for competitions.
