I have a 3.3 uw, and a 4.0 weighted. I have always taken AP's and honors, never anything less (AP NSL, AP Bio, AP Calc AB/BC, AP Lit, AP Lang, AP Chem, AP World, Molecular Biology), and I've played field hockey, and track, and been an SGA class officer. Along with that, i have a science internship, am a part of the DNAcademy, STARS program, American Red Cross, and Amnesty Int'l. My SAT scores are 1990 and I know most def. that all of my recommendations are going to be extraordinary. Would UMBC be a good undergraduate decision if i want to end up in medical school? I live in Maryland, so it would be a smart financial choice. I cannot get into a combined med program, i know that. I'm applying only for my parents sake. Where else can I apply and expect to get accepted into? My dad seems to think that if I don't get into a combined program, i can kiss my med school dreams good bye, and that the only good place for a pre-med student is JHU. Neither of those are gonna happen, i feel so confused and down right now. I don't know where to apply anymore.

you have a really really good shot at college park (I got in instate with slightly lower SAT & less APs).. dont know much about the premed program but its a great school..

Apply to UMD-CP

UMBC= U Made a Bad Choice, U Must Be Crazy

I'm just kidding around. UMBC is a pretty good school, but almost everyone who goes there commutes. You'll have a lot more fun at College Park as there's tons of stuff going on on campus.

Can anyone tell me what UMBC is like on weekends? I understand the majority of students commute but for those who stay on campus is there stuff going on. Do they get to Baltimore or into DC. My D is not into sports so she does not need that but what do the students who stay around do?

are their any other schools in the area that i should apply. schools that have a good pre-med major?

UMBC has the Meyerhoff scholarship program for folks heading into the sciences, and other nice merit packages as well. Apparently many Meyerhoff folks go on to med school, too. You might talk to Admissions and see if they think you might be competitive for $$.

amrita08,
The University of Maryland College Park is a good state school but it will require you to remain focused. (I'm a former orientation advisor.) The classes can be VERY large and juniors and seniors are no longer automatically able to live on campus (not even honor students) because of the over crowding. UMCP has more school spirit than the University of Maryland at Baltimore County. There isn't much going on at UMBC on the weekends. However, the classes are relatively small, the academics are great and the professors are very helpful. There are numerous opportunities for RESEARCH. Students still manage to get together and socialize. I think that you will more easily be recognized as a shining star at UMBC because you will receive attention from your professors as well as your peers. I think UMBC is the biggest "secret" in Maryland. Just do well and your med school dreams will come true. Best of luck!

UMBC is really pushing to become a strong science/research center. People do get into good med schools from there. It is much smaller than UMCP. Look at Goucher College. They have one of the best premed programs for college graduates. You can be premed there and take any courses that you want at Hopkins on exchange. You should also look at St. Mary's College of Maryland in St. Mary's City. It's public and in-state tuition is low. You can major in bio, chem, or biochem there, and be in a small private school environment at a state school price.

Mom is right again. UMBC is a good science/eng school with ample research opportunities and vast parking lots. However, it’s a bar lower than UMCP. Schools similar to UMBC are:

Goucher College
Loyola College in MD
Towson State University
Villa Julie College ;)

As mom suggested, St. Mary's College of Maryland is a hidden jewel for those preferring LACish type educational setting. Be aware though it’s located in the country, about 2 hrs away from any civilization.
