Yet another person applying to biomedical sciences PhD programs. I'm starting the applications and trying to decide which programs I want to apply to. My research interests are pretty broad, and I don't want to limit myself, so so far I've been thinking I would apply to mostly umbrella programs at these schools.

However, I am very interested in learning about the medical aspects of whatever I end up studying.. I've found a couple of programs that have pathobiology/molecular medicine programs (columbia, nyu, and weill cornell has an immunology and microbial pathogenesis program ). These appear to be right up my alley, since they have such a medical focus, but they aren't part of the umbrella programs. I'm nervous about limiting myself, or perhaps my chances for admission (i have no idea what is easier to get into). I plan on looking to see if the faculty in these programs overlaps, which will probably help my decision, but does anybody have any advice about this?
