UMCP Honors College

Does anyone know the average GPA and SAT scores of students accepted into the honors college? Also, can any current UMDCP honors students share their experience in the program?

I spoke to my regional admissions counselor while I was on campus over the summer and she emailed me this info. She said “Approximately the top 20% of our accepted applicant pool are invited to the Honors Program. Selection is based on merit (SAT/ACT scores, and high school performance). Based on last year’s applicant pool, student’s with a 1320 on the SAT or a 29 on the ACT were considered competitive applicants for the Honors Program.”

Hope this helps and good luck!

I assume she meant 1320 out of 1600, by the way.

Yes, out of 1600 - they only look at CR + M. However, just because you have a 1320 or a 29, that does not mean you will be invited to honors. My freshman engineer’s scores on both tests were higher than that (took both and submitted both ACT and SAT), but was invited to scholars rather than honors. Actually was a better match because of the internship/research component in scholars, so it’s all good.

You can also get invited for being below the average, I had a 1290 SAT and a 4.2 GPA and I got into Honors. So I assume they look at a little beyond that because the average my year was like a 1310 and a 4.4 I think.

As for experiences in the Honors program, I’ve loved it. (I did University Honors btw) Living in the big honors dorm freshman year is nice and I had a good experience with the people there. Honors seminars can be hit and miss, so try to do as much research beforehand about them before signing up for one. And don’t get me wrong, the miss ones aren’t necessarily bad but might not be what you expected or might be boring/a ton of work. But there’s some absolute gems of honor seminars (HONR238D is my personal favorite) and there’s some really terrific professors. They can be great because they’re about super specific subjects and it’s more about immersing yourself in the subject than trying to get a good grade (and most are pretty easy to get A’s in).

I completed my honors citation in the spring of my sophomore year but I’m still in the program and can go to events and am on the listserv, etc. It’s a good program and a good experience.

Thank you all for your input, it’s very helpful! I’m really hoping I’ll be invited to the program!!

@maryversity nowhere did I say that those scores guaranteed admission to the honors college. I am simply relaying the information that was given to me. Those numbers are AVERAGES for a reason, meaning there were people both above and below that score that were accepted. All I that I was told was that applicants with those scores were considered COMPETITIVE, but I never said that anyone without those scores could not be accepted or could be.

@classof1313 - I know you didn’t say anything about a guarantee!

I was just clarifying that range you gave so people don’t have expectations/disappointment. Even with a high GPA and high test scores, students may be invited to scholars instead of honors, and scholars is a great program also…

Hey!
I’ve been researching the honors college a lot and I really want to get in! UMDCP is my 1st choice. If anyone who knows about the program, is in the program, or knows people who got in could chance me it would be A LOTTTT! I made a thread with my stats.

Thanks in advance!
