[/ul]**Reflection[ /b][ul]
[] Strengths: EC
[] Weaknesses: SAT score
[] Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: Well rounded person. My GPA, SATs are not superb, but I think I’ve demonstrated that I’ve tried hard in high school, and colleges see that.
[] Where else were you accepted/waitlisted/rejected: Penn State, Ohio State, UPitt

[/ul]General Comments: I didn’t think I would get in because I messed up my resume (too unorganized) and my second essay didn’t adequately answer the essay question. It wasn’t until the day before the deadline that a peer told me that my essay didn’t answer the essay prompt. Either way, UMD administrators must have liked my unique approach enough to give me the green light. Maryland’s my second choice so I’m happy that I got in :)

Applied to engineering…got into letters and sciences (freshman connection)

Decision: Accepted!/size (in-state)

[] AP (place score in parenthesis): Got tons of 5s, one 4, and one 3.

[] Job/Work Experience: summer internship at an university
[] Volunteer/Community service: Lots of tutoring ES and MS kids
[] Summer Activities: see job experience, also workshop for journalism
[] Essays: Decent. I think I chose the “Sum of Parts” & “my own topic” options
[] Teacher Recommendation: It must have been good
[li] Counselor Rec: Probably generic
[/li]

[/ul]Other[ul]
[] State (if domestic applicant): MD
[] School Type: Large public
[] Ethnicity: Asian
[] Gender: Female
[] Income Bracket: middle class
[] Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.): not that I know of?

[/ul]Reflection[ul]
[] Strengths: Solid SAT, strong ECs, good teacher rec, & lots of local journalism awards
[] Weaknesses: GPA, kind of average. But it’s a little deceiving b/c my weighted is ridiculously high for my unweighted (shows some serious course rigor).
[] Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: My major matched my extracurriculars. Also being in-state, applying Priority/EA, and a little bit of luck helped
[] Where else were you accepted/waitlisted/rejected: Got into Northeastern and UNC-Chapel Hill. Waiting on the rest.

[/ul]General Comments: Congrats to everyone who got in! Also to those deferred, don’t give up hope! Note to future generations: don’t give up hope if you’re not a 3.75+ GPA kid, just do what you’re good at and hopefully it’ll show in your college apps and essays.

[] Where else were you accepted/waitlisted/rejected: Accepted: Pitt, Stony Brook. Still waiting for a bunch more, but I’m happy to have UMD on the list.

[/ul]General Comments: Glad to be part of the honors college, and now REALLY hoping for a shot at Banneker/Key. UMD will definitely be high on the list if I get some merit aid. Congrats to all, and good luck with scholarship/college decisions coming out in March. If you didn’t get the decision you were hoping for, keep your head up. You have complete control over what you do from now on, and it’s not worth it to spend lamenting over what could’ve been. Easier said than done, I know, but it’s worth it to move on as quickly as possible.

Do you think you will do freshman connection? My s. just got into it. The more I read about the incredible (Ivy League ball park) grades and scores of those who got in fall, the better I feel about his getting in even in spring, where still very strong qualiifications are required

Look into freshman connection. The more I read about it the more I think it sounds like it might be a really good thing.
