UMD accepted students day

Hello All,
We will be visiting UMD on Friday for admitted students day. Looking for suggestions to make the most of it.My son will be a CS major (honors with ACES LLP). What can we expect…will there be tour of the LLP dorm for ACES…i did not see that in the event schedule…is it possible to request for one? Also I saw in some other threads students were able to sit in on classes…don’t know if its too late for son to request that?Thank you

we are still narrowing down his choices…so really looking forward to the admitted students day

This is from UMD’s website: We encourage all registered guests to download the TERPlife app to take advantage of a free and easy way to get the most out of your visit. Available for iOS and Android, simply download the app, search for “Admitted Student Open House” and begin viewing the day’s sessions and tours, designing a schedule that best meets your interests and utilizing all the other resources you’ll have at your fingertips!

Also if you are in state and UMD is not too far, you may want to check with CS if they are hosting a preview session the evening prior the 3/30/2018 admitted day. School of Engineering is doing so and we are attending the preview on Thursday evening.

How did you find out about the engineering preview? My son is going Friday and got into Engineering but didn’t hear about any preview.

This week’s preview session is likely full, so you can call and see if they are willing/able to add your son for this one or you can try signing up for the second one, if that has availability…

There’s no dorm tour, but I’m in ACES and can give you a tour if you DM me! And, honestly, if you go on the schedule of classes and look for CMSC131 or 132 lecture times, if your son goes in alone, he can probably just slip in the back and sit in on the lecture. As a student in a CS class, I’ve brought friends to sit in on classes and the professor didn’t notice/care.

@whenyoubelieve …thank you so much…might take you up on that offer. Thanks again

@navyterpx2 I don’t remember how I found out about Engineering’s preview session. It could’ve been a post on this forum and/or my D’s randomly looking into engineering’s website once she decided to commit. It seems that the 3/29/2018 session has reached its capacity. However, the April 5 one is still accepting registration. https://futureumdengr.wufoo.com/forms/zezumm71egyqs0/

My son is currently signed up for the Admitted Students Day on April 6, however, we now have a big conflict with that day. I wish I had booked March 30 since we are currently on spring break, however, I thought we were going to be out of town. I tried to change to March 30 online several times a couple of weeks ago, then called and the person said that we need to just keep checking the website for cancellations. I keep checking to no avail. We live approximately 60-90 minutes drive away in Virginia (depending on traffic) so I’m thinking of driving us there in the morning and hoping they won’t turn us away since we will be physically present.

We’ve attended general student tours at UVA and VT last fall and no one was really checking too carefully as to who was there. We also traveled further to admitted students days at Univ of SC, WVU, and Ohio State. We were pre-registered but I’m pretty sure based on what we saw and the nice reception that we got that we would not have been turned away had we not been pre-registered.

Even though we are closer by, we had not visited Maryland since we didn’t think we could get the OOS tuition to work. Our son recently found out he received a good merit scholarship so now Maryland is in the running and a top consideration since its a great school (and my husband attended there!) I understand the need for capacity management at these student events but I can’t imagine that they would turn prospective students away if already there. I’m sure there will be some “no shows” who don’t take the time to cancel their reservation. Any thoughts or experience with this?

@LUVSML I would go. You don’t need to “check in”. Just follow the crowd.

Forgot to mention my son plans to major in CS as well. @LotcaJH - thanks for the suggestion to check for CS.
@Priya2015 - looks like the do have some additional sessions for CS for prospective students. https://undergrad.cs.umd.edu/future
April 5 2PM and April 12 2PM

@LUVSML …thank you for the info…unfortunately we will not be able to attend either of the april sessions. If you are able to go for one of them, could you please share the info.Thank you

@priya2015 - yes, I will share. Hopefully, we will have no problem attending tomorrow’s session and if our son really likes it, will try to make one of those sessions. I think he has a conflict with the April 5th date but maybe we can make the 12th work…hard missing all of these school days recently though for college visits (but its important!)

We will be attending UMD’s admitted students’ day tomorrow too. My son is also an incoming Computer Science student and he is very much looking forward to it.

We were able to get a last minute registration for the admitted student day tomorrow. The confirmation email said that we would receive an email with scheduling info 5 days before the event, but haven’t received it since we just got in. On the website it says checkin begins at 8:15. Can anyone tell us where to park and check in. Feel like we are going with no info…thanks!

Download the TerpLife app. I believe most everything is there.

@pct3 park in lot 4B and take shuttles to Adele H Stamp Student Union. Checking begins at 8:00. Download the “TerpLife” app on your phone for schedules and maps. Look for admitted students open house on the app for the schedule.

@priya2015 there is an event for ACES students in their dorm from 3-5 tomorrow. Your child should have received an invite. You can see the dorm then.

@sdevorefl @Annie4321 Thank you - I just downloaded the app and saw all the info! We arrived this afternoon and drove around campus for a bit. It was overwhelming to me but my son was ok. Seemed to have so much traffic going through the campus. I wonder if that’s normal. My son said the kids seemed normal…I guess that’s a good sign
