@LUVSML Don’t the April 5th and 12th (2pm) sessions look like they are for prospective applicants, as opposed to admitted students? Or do you think that does not matter? Thanks!
The ACES event today is on the first floor of the dorm building that ACES students live in. It doesn’t give you access to the living space - only the learning space. Just thought anyone going should know!
For those attending the scholars part of the admitted student day, they take you over and let you see the inside of the dorms and they also take you to the dining hall that’s near the dorm section for the scholar students. That was a really nice piece of the tour and visit to the school that we weren’t expecting today. Because of that we didn’t end up taking a campus tour. we thought that the visit Was pretty well run and enjoyed going to see the campus and learn more about the program she would be a part of.
@LUVSML Did you cancel the admitted students on April 6th. I just cancelled my ticket to the 13th, and I was looking for a spot on the 6th. I was wondering if you weren’t going if you could cancel it so there would be a spot open. If you are going sorry to bother you. I called them to cancel it
@ sunparent - I feel like we got enough good info from the computer science breakout session that we don’t need to attend the April 5th or 12th sessions. However, if we do decide to attend, I will pass along info and would appreciate the same from anyone else who may attend.
@emcon24 - I did cancel our April 6th spot via email just a couple of hours ago.
FYI - We did just show up on Friday, March 30 and they had a special registration area (via computers) for those who were not previously registered to sign up. Be sure to bring the Maryland student ID that you were assigned. They seemed to have expected that people would just show up unregistered so that was fine.
Traffic was absolutely HORRIBLE getting into the parking lot on Friday morning from University Blvd off of Route 1. They really should have had a police officer directing traffic in. I don’t know if it was worse because a lot of high schools were on spring break or if this was the normal crowd for these events. We thought we gave ourselves plenty of time to get there but we were late to the first session. It is set up for you to register/check-in, then grab some muffins/ pastries/juice then go to your school of interest session. The school of science was in the alumni hall so we had to walk another 10 minutes after checking into the student union.
Also, as part of the open house, the campus tour is abbreviated to approx 15 minutes vs. the hour 15 minute long normal campus tour since they assume most students have already been there (we had not visited before so I would have liked to have seen more) or at least know they want to go there.
My husband grew up in College Park, MD and his parents lived off of busy route 1 so that is all that we really knew of College Park and we did not have high expectations for the campus setting. My son and I were very pleasantly surprised at how much we liked the campus and we were very impressed with the computer science department.
@LUVSML, thanks for all of this information!! We are planning on attending the 4/13 event from out of state and it’s very helpful to know what to anticipate. We are also trying to decide whether we should come late (basically just for for the LLP session and a self tour) and go to part of the admitted GW event on the same day in the morning - crazy! Ugh.
@LUVSML I was in that horrible traffic right along with you on Friday morning, March 30. I have a son who is a junior at the school so I have driven that route multiple times. Along with admitted students day that started at 8, that crowd also included all commuter students as well as faculty. That is what made it as crowded as it was. Once we got close to Xfinity, the right lane went to park in 4B for admitted students day and more cars stayed left to head onto campus which was more of the students and faculty there for classes.
Traffic can definitely be a mess. We planned to arrive at the entrance to the road leading into lot 4B by 7:45 am, and by getting there 15 minutes beforehand we had a chance to grab a spot in 4B and easily catch the shuttle up to the Stamp Union for arrival at 8. Don’t plan to arrive after 8 am thinking you’ll have 45 minutes to spare - by 8 am I’m guessing that lot was full and nothing at UMCP is close by :). We had no trouble catching a shuttle back to the lot at 3:45 after the Scholars additional events…the bus driver even stopped early to pick us up on our walk to the pickup point since it was raining.
We are attending this Friday. Did any of you attend classes in your college at the end of the day? Also, how did the Residence Hall Tour work out? I notice they have it from 11:30 to 2:30. Do you just drop in anytime during that window? How much time should you keep aside for it?
@sunparent we didn’t attend any classes, but part of that was because the Scholars program session runs 2 hours plus a residence hall tour, so by the time that was done it was 3:30. They do a residence hall tour as part of their presentation. Other special programs might do the same. My guess is there are few classes offered late on Friday after the admitted student events are over.
Thanks @lifegarding Our “special” program (if that is what it is) is FIRE which other than an info. session does not seem to have a tour - it is not a living program. There is a Object Oriented Programming class at 4pm, which my daughter has reached out the prof to sit in and he has agreed.
@sunparent - we didn’t attend any classes. They have that 11:30-2:30 window to tour a residence hall - yes, just drop by as it works into your schedule. Not that impressive of a dorm room, really. They also advised to go ahead and sign up for housing now online to get your best choice. They have doubles and triples. I assume the last people who sign up get the triple rooms. You don’t have to be committed to the school or pay anything to go ahead and sign up for housing. Since as of yesterday, Maryland hasn’t released their regular decision admittance, it would be good to get ahead of those students. It took about 15-20 minutes to see the residence hall but it is another 10 minute walk away to where the dorms are around the football stadium area from the Stamp/Union center so I would say allow at least 30 minutes.
If someone scheduled for 4/6 and isn’t going, please cancel!
@jjh0210 From what we experienced last Friday (we did register in advance but arrived late), I think you could simply go to the event. Would strongly recommend download the Terplife app first to plan your day in advance. We found the Clark School of Engineering’s preview session extremely helpful: http://www.engrscholarships.umd.edu/admitted. The April 5 registration has closed but I think you can just show up for the evening event. At the 3/29 preview, they held two separate concurrent sessions for parents and students. I am sure you can find a current student majoring in bioengineering to answer your questions specific to BME. The career services center (the one specific within the engineering school) presentation (on preview event) will probably be most helpful for you given that you want to know about BME internships. We learned that the presentation given by the engineering school at the first part of morning sessions on the admitted day (Friday event) is basically the same one they did on the preview the previous day. But you should plan to take part of the engineering facility tour and other activities on the admitted day.
I’ve scheduled for 4/13, but 4/6 works better for my family. I contacted admissions and the woman said there was a chance of being turned away. I’m from NY and do not want to risk being turned away. Definitely looking forward to the trip either way.
@jjh0210 Thanks. I spoke from our own experience on 3/30. Perhaps the remaining two events have a much larger crowd. Did not know you are out of state so I’d agree with you playing safe.
I’ve been checking it hourly and a spot just opened up. Now scheduled for 4/6. Thanks for the advice regarding what to look for.
My DD got accepted but we are so sad that Maryland is not offering more Admitted students Day events. To me it seems like if they want more students to commit they should just add another day, Really don’t get it.
@Asil65 just show up on admitted students day. It’s not like they take names before letting people in to sessions and tours. Download the TerpLife app and you’re good to go… Get there on time (by 7.45) cause traffic/parking is pretty awful.
