My D is considering UMD as a safety school, her GPA is 3.81 uw, 3.94w, SATs are in the 710-740 range, ACT is 33. I have not been able to figure out if UMD is a "by the numbers" school. Does anyone have objective sources, or any other advice --- perhaps she is a bit too aggressive to use UMD as a safety.

UMD is also on USNWR's list of schools offering rolling admission, which presumable means that applying early improves your chances. Is that correct? If she has her app complete by mid October, when can she expect to hear from the school? Will she have to make a decision by 5/1/08 or earlier?

UMD is NOT rolling admission. Rolling admission implies the sooner you apply, the sooner you hear. UMD has a priority deadline of Dec. 1 in which you get an admission decision by Feb 15 IIRC. The regular deadline is January 15 and you hear by April 1. I don't know what USNWR is but they are wrong, UMD does not use rolling admission.

UMD - University College is NOT University of Maryland - College Park. It is an affiliated institution on the campus for working adults and other non-conventional students.

UMCP is not a rolling admissions school. The above poster gave the correct information. In addition, if your daughter does not apply by Dec. 1 (Pt. 1, simple identification information, is due by Nov. 1) she may not be admitted; over 90% of the freshmen class is chosen from those who applied by the priority deadline.

I do believe that her stats put her in the range for the honors program at CP, making it a good safety/safe match provided she apply by the priority deadline. I think that it is mostly a "by the numbers" school, although admissions representatives may stress the essay and, admittedly, UMD's application is more writing-intensive than most (especially among state universities). However, her grades and SAT scores indicate she is probably a decent writer, anyway!

umcp11 is correct. University College is for working adults mostly and is not College Park (which is the main campus). I would say it's a pretty safe match as well. She has a good chance to get into the special programs (honors, scholars, etc.). If she sends in her application by Dec 1, she will hear by mid February (I rec'd my acceptance email on Feb 16th).

I wouldn't call Maryland a backup school for your daughter. It's actually a perfect match, depending on her extracurriculars. The average GPA is 3.89 W and about a 1240-1400 SAT, but for LEP, you need much higher stats.

I know people with higher stats then your daughter in the most competitive high schools and learning programs (IB) who were denied or only offered admission for spring semester.

A better backup would be UDelaware, UConn, or UMass Amherst.
