UMD College Park class of 2022 EA discussion

What would happen to an undecided major who does not get acceptance to Smith as a transfer? Can they still get a BA from UMD without being attached to Smith?

i have a question guys, someone posted on their snapchat story from my school that umd called them and told him he got into the spring admissions, this is definitely fake right?? umd wouldn’t be calling people. there is a large possibility he is lying, i just wanted other opinions because im freaking out

wow, I cant imagine admissions calling students but maybe like the Terp bus they do it randomly, good for PR!

@reb091393 - Yes, they can. The Letters & Sciences advisors are there to help students in the Undecided Majors category. I believe a major has to be declared by the end of Sophomore year.

There are students who have done internal transfers into Smith. But it is competitive.

How likely is it to get into Smith business school with a 1380 SAT and a 4.64WGPA and 3.84UWGPA. Assuming your EC are packed and you have taken 8 APs? My SAT is what is worrying me.

@Mason135 From what I understand, a lot more than SAT score goes into deciding the direct admits. They are all about diversity. Are you in state, are you an URM, ethnicity etc. With that said, last years SMITH direct admit average SAT was 1440.

Many kids who get accepted into Freshman Connection don’t necessarily have low grades. It was explained that they were missing just one small thing, but not enough to turn them away. Their average GPA is slightly lower, but you’ll find plenty of kids who you wonder why they were offered FC. As far as transfer to Smith, if you are smart and can do the work, you’ll get the transfer. It’s competitive, but all Business Schools are even with a direct admit. Many people want that guarantee of being accepted directly, but the work will be just as rigorous elsewhere. The requirements to transfer require to have close to an A- average, but if you want a top job at graduation, you’re going to need a good GPA anyway. It has risk, but most good things in life do. It’s definitely not an easy choice to make. ps. I don’t believe SAT scores are considered by the time you transfer to Smith. At that point, that ship has sailed. It’s GPA, leadership, involvement, essays and availability.

UMD Student who is currently in smith answering questions about internal transfer to smith:

Smith is the only competitive LEP school at UMD; meaning, you have to meet the minimum requirements and be placed in a competitive pool whereas other majors is guaranteed admission with the minimum requirements met.

Smith is very competitive and I have never heard of anyone being accepted with a GPA below 3.5. To be guaranteed admission into Smith, I’d recommend at least a 3.7 GPA with extracurricular (internship, leadership positions).

Again, Smith does consider other factors into their decision process but I’d say that they mostly care about GPA. So aim for a 3.6+

@Bedcrumbs - Yep, an A- average. Coming form someone who transferred too.

Does anybody know if all applicants who apply EA to Maryland get a final decision of accept, denied, spring admit or freshman connection or waitlist? Do they ever " “defer” anybody from the EA pool to the RD applicant pool?

4 more hours bruh

@trackmbe3 - Spring Admission and Freshman Connection are not separate decisions. If you get Spring, you can choose Freshman Connect or elect to travel or take a course at your local community college.

No deferrals @trackmbe3. It’s either an acceptance or rejection.

lets rideeeee

wait they don’t defer??? so what do they offer

@sss111222 spring semester, so you’d start school in 2019

I applied for Smith Business School as my LEP and Kinesiology as my LEP alternate major. I wish they would at least consider me for my alternate major rather than pushing me straight to freshman connection if I don’t get into Smith.

@Mason135 you’d get the admittance into the university major blind, so your LEP would have no bearing on whether or not you would be pushed to spring

I think EA-UMD does defer?
