BTW, @Deaston I am so confused by your not getting merit aid.
D visited UMBC yesterday on Scholars Day…she got into Honors there and 10k/year, but I don’t think it has the vibe she wants. Looks like her last MD option is JHU.
@CU1986 Does Presidential really offer $8k for in-state students? I heard on here that the max is 5k for in state. After all, B/K semifinalists only get $8k as well and that’s the most prestigious merit award UMD has.
In-state, Honors engineering, 34 ACT, 3.96 GPA. 5k/yr presidential scholarship
@Laerai Although most posts this year indicate 5k/yr Presidential for IS, there are multiple instances/posts of students receiving 8k/yr IS Presidential in prior year threads. I’m assuming the same for current year. Also as a side note, UMDCP IS tuition was <8K/year for many years until a couple years ago and is now $8,648 for 2018/2019.
OOS NJ Scholars
35 ACT. 3.9 GPA
No merit
@CU1986 Is it possible that they may have lowered the max in state Presidential for this year? I’ve been looking throughout the threads and I don’t think I’ve seen any mention of anybody getting more than 20k over four years other than your post. For reference, I had a 1560 SAT and 4.79/4.0 W/UW, and I also received 20k which seems consistent across most recipients this year.
@BoroDad Not worth paying full price for OOS public, is it? Sorry you were disappointed as well.
OOS - NY
Sat 1530 ( one sitting)
GPA 3.84 unweighted
Admitted to Smith for Finance
No merit
Congrats to all of you who are, or whose students are, about to become Terps!
D has officially broken up with UMD…she cancelled her accepted students day registration.
Thanks to everyone for all your valuable input through this process, especially @maryversity
@JMRome On paper, probably correct about not paying full OOS price when we have $10k or full tiuition merit from three other publics which are cheaper to begin with.
However - shameless plug for UMd - it is UMd is a very good and very well regarded school with a nice campus and great school spirit. All the alumna I know loved it. Scholars and honors seem like a great way to meet people. If a student really wanted to be in DC, it may be cheaper than the GWs and Americans with some of the same advantages (proximity to internships). Might also help if they want to be in the DC area after graduation. Of course, I’m now describing my S19 who wanted all of those things but who’s elsewhere now and not my current senior S17 who as other plans. Oh well. Bad timing.
I agree with your feelings about UMD BoroDad, it’s a good school in a great location. Will need to see what offers come in from other schools before a final decision can be made.
is the website working for everyone else?
it isn’t for me
@BoroDad not disagreeing with any of that. With other great offers from equally good schools, though, and little to no debt coming out of them (we do need to think about med school debt), and no real affinity for the area, UMD is a non-starter for us. It’s a shame, really, because D did like the school, but she already preferred one school over it, and has yet to hear from several more, so it really isn’t a heartbreaker for her. I totally understand how it could be for others, though.
Please be patient. I think they’re having problems. Has anyone been able to get their account set up?
Signed in to our account for the first time tonight specifically to check aid. OoS and accepted to journalism school. No honors, no scholars and no merit. Tough since this is the only school so far not to offer anything.
website is down on…I called their IT hotline and they are aware of issue
In state
34 ACT
3.97 uw, 4.7 w
Honors admit

No merit scholarship
On a positive note, one of the other schools D applied to just bumped her merit scholarship. She hasn’t seen the school yet but we know several people who go there and they love it. We’re visiting in a few weeks. And…she’ll leave there debt-free and have lots of opportunities. So ending the day on a high.
@TedFerg we were not able to set up an account. It kept timing out when we tried to create a password.
I was able to get in around 9:30. Might want to try again.
