@BoroDad Thanks, and you too. When it comes down to it, D is going to have to eliminate 11 schools. UMD made this choice easy for her. Kids will end up where they are meant to be.
Well it appears no merit here either. But being in state Umd is still affordable. Other than that very happy with honors placement and college major. So it’s high on the list but waiting for several end of march schools.
Anyone who recently got their UMD ID - did it really take 48 hours to access the site? S got caught up in the IT crash yesterday and just signed on today. Someone mentioned looking at Coalition ,then checklist but only his Honors acceptance and his LLP is listed there. OOS and need some merit $ or UMD has to come off the list.
Man, I wish I could have some input on awards for all of you…You should all take pride in your student’s successes to date. I know I am a major cheerleader for Maryland, but, I truly believe that it doesn’t matter where you go to school as much as what you do when you get there. I have every confidence that all of your students will be successful.
Just curious for those who did not receive scholarships - what was your student’s major? My absolutely UNscientific thought - just my hunch, based on my own students’ experiences at UMD, is that engineering majors get the majority of scholarships, not so much for the business majors. This was just our experience and my observation though. For our family, it seems to be holding true even for departmental scholarships - engineering student received them, business major did not.
@davenmame Actually, my anecdotal evidence from my two kids and their peers from our school district (and word of mouth) from out of state who applied to UMD is that those who applied for engineering or business did not receive as many or as high dollar amount as students who applied for other majors. IMO i think its the issue of supply and demand—because both are limited enrollment and extremely competitive to get into. There is no need to offer scholarships to attract students for those programs. Another factor affecting number and $ amounts of scholarships is geography. Whereas 5 or more years ago many out-of-state (OOS) students from the northeast region (NYC metro area), for example, received $$$ as an allure to attend, that bait is no longer needed as Maryland now has its pick of the cream of the crop of OOS applicants, with many more applicants than spaces. In contrast, schools like Ohio State still need and want to attract more OOS applicants so the National Buckeye scholarship ($12,500) is still being offered on top of additional smaller scholarships to attract top stat students on a more objective academic criteria (SAT/ACT and gpa/class rank) basis, although in the past few years with more applicants than spaces the review has become a bit more holistic, so no longer guaranteed.
DD didn’t get any merit scholarships. She is a govt and politics LEP major. But, we thought a scholarship would be a long shot given how strong the applicants are.
re scholarships - DS17 got a nice one (I think $12K) as an OOS engineering student - strong application & stats (he did not attend); DS - 18 - no scholarship/merit - as a business major - less strong app & stats though.
@trackmbe3 given OSU ranks higher than UMD I would follow the money. No brainer. UMD has been known to give little money since relatives attended over 15 years ago.
