@camcam2022 Ranked higher than UMD in what? I do not think I have seen a single ranking publication put OSU above UMD in business or engineering undergraduate programs (the only two @trackmbe3 cited).
@trackmbe3 I certainly do agree with you about your philosophy, and it appears that Ohio State is right up there with Maryland on how they distribute OOS Scholarships (at least this year). My son was way overqualified for National Buckeye and invited to their Business Scholars program, with a 32 on his ACT and just shy of a 93 GPA and did not receive any merit money. I feel that many of these universities across the board with popular majors such as Engineering & Business have more than enough students to fill their quotas, so they don’t necessarily need to be overly generous with scholarships.
First kid was accepted to Scholars with $8,000 per year merit with a 3.7 UW and 2170 SAT. Second kid accepted to Honors with 4.0 UW and 35 ACT and no merit. Both instate and neither attending.
Hi @Deaston. Do you mind sharing where your 2 students went instead? Accepted to UMD with instate tuition, merit and scholars seems such a great deal to me…
how much money does umd usually give students for merit? are full rides common?
@WilliamNYC Wesleyan and Pomona. It worked out wonderfully.
Have all scholarships for incoming freshmen been released?
As per UMD’s Twitter account yes @Selggivcm, everyone who got something has been notified. No news = Bad news… :((
MD Admissions tweeted that all merit scholarships have been released. I do know that some departmental scholarships can arrive later but no way to know when or if you will get one.
@davenmame My D is Biology LEP…and I’m surmising that her choice of biology for pre med has worked against her in the merit department at several schools. Not that she hasn’t gotten good offers…just not what others with similar or lower stats got at the same schools. Anyway, she has a couple of very strong choices and at this point we’re just waiting for all decisions to come in. Good luck, everyone!
Has anyone heard anything about which Scholars program they were accepted to?
We have not, either.
@JMRome exactly my sentiments. I too think that D’s Biology major choice for pre-med has hurt her. This whole process has been a learning experience for us. D has strong ECs in music and sports, perfect GPA incl a ton of APs, high SATs (though 1520-1530 is no longer enough it seems) years of real work experience as well as internship yet most of the college results and merit awards don’t seem to validate that. Reading various threads in College Confidential it looks like many are in the same boat. We’ll count our blessings with College Park and wish everyone good luck with their choices.
It’s crazy that our kids have to be near perfect to get into a State school. If we weren’t in state, my son wouldn’t be going. The shame is I have another son who is working very hard, but does not quIte have the same stats as my Senior. It’s sad that we will likely have to pay OOS tuition because he may not get into his state university with a 4.0 GPA. (SAT scores a little low for UMD)
@Green2022 We echo your sentiments and see this happening across several universities. I never thought Major or number of kids that applied from your school would come into play, but the harsh reality appears to be that overqualified students are not getting merit in many cases where kids with lower GPA’s, ACT’s are. My son is in the same boat.
Son accepted into engineering, in-state, 34 ACT at MoCo magnet program. No Merit $$$.
@mom of boys2- I attended a college information meeting at my D’s private high school about 10 years ago. The guest speaker was an ex admissions officer from Princeton who predicted that because of the insane prices of private colleges, the state schools and the ivey’s were going to become even more selective, and for kids (and parents really), willing to Apply ED, admissions would be much easier. I think this is What we are seeing. In this country admissions isn’t really a meritocracy , it’s all tied up with money. My husband is British, and there admissions are all about the numbers. You have the test scores and you get in . No such thing as “holistic” admissions, whatever that means!!
@Green2022 why does pre-med put you at a disadvantage?
Scholars decisions will be out no later than Thursday afternoon
Decisions out today!
