UMD College Park Quick Assessment for Transfer Admission

Short and sweet here...

Am finishing up my last few credits until I get my AA degree at a local community college (Wor-Wic to be exact). (47 credits so far and 13 in progress)
Had a very good standing for first 3 semesters then I got a lot of issues in my personal life so right now I am in the 3.3 GPA standing (had all A's and a GPA 3.89 for first 3 semesters, then got some bad bad grades in the following semester).
Now I am looking to transfer into UMCP in Spring and am about to send in application. I have PTK, Honors, Deans List 3 (will be 4) times, and have a few extracurriculars ( i.e. soup kitchen helping, some on-campus volunteering in tutoring)

What are my chances of getting admitted despite my low (at present) GPA?
Should I hold off my app until I can get my GPA up a few notches?

I know I screwed up and my loss of focus in mid game looks bad, but I was hoping to use it as an advantage (like referring to the fact that I need an immersive college campus atmosphere as opposed to my bad living conditions at my home currently-wont get into it but there is bad influence from step parent), abuse, my dad died when I was 18 and have been devastated for 8 years since etc..) and I am looking to get away from all that and exercise my mind in a place with like minded people I can debate issues with.

Thank you so much and please let me know if I can do anything else to improve my chances.

P.S: I DO NOT want to even think about attending Salisbury University or even Towson for that matter. I simply would hate it since I live in Salisbury and have to get away from here! I want UMCP as it seems to perfect fit for me (in state at least) I am done partying as a 26 year old ex bartender I’ve got it out of my system. I’ve traveled across world to Asia–Cambodia, Thailand-- and recently Germany, Prague, Amsterdam. Could my life experience be a benefit as opposed to all the young kids looking to party whom I’ll be competing with for entrance?

Best wishes. Talk to pre-transfer adviser at UMCP about your grades and how to present travel in best light. I believe they will appreciate your maturity.

Great thanks for you response. Is it better to go on-campus and see her or call or email for advising session? or does it not matter?

It is competitive to transfer. You could try calling to see how close your record is to those who were recently accepted.

If you are in the ballpark to be admitted, a follow up meeting in person might be next.

I already met on campus there with housing director to ask some ?s and establish a contact.I scheduled a in person meeting for Oct 2nd (should I do it sooner since Nov 1st is admission deadline)? Also what are my chances with a GPA of 3.3 and what should I focus more on, getting the GPA up as much as possible (i.e. taking more 4 credit classes and acing them or getting some great essay or teacher recc letters or extracurric’s?

Oh sorry, should I apply now or wait until next semester when I have better GPA standing? That is my main confusion
