woah why u so rude soofdad
i was mainly asking for people who werenāt in the honors college, if they received any merit scholarships, sounds like that doesnāt apply to you so iām not asking you.
I am not trying to be rude.
People not in the Honors College do get Merit Scholarships. I have been on this forum since 2013, and have seen that every year.
I have never seen anyone be able to predict, or even chance, merit scholarships.
You have to consider the numbers.
ALL students admitted during the EA round are considered for Merit Scholarships.
There were probably 25,000 EA applicants, maybe more. There were probably 11,000 to 12,000 admitted.
There were probably 4,000 admitted to the Honors college.
UMD has 3 merit scholarship categories: the B/K, the Presidential, and the Deanās.
There are only about 400 B/K scholarships offered to students admitted to the Honors College.
There are only about 400 2-year Deanās scholarships offered to In-state admitted students.
There are some number of 4-year Presidential scholarships spread among those who did not get a B/K or a Deanās scholarships.
I have Never been able to find out how many Presidential Scholarships are awarded. UMD does not publish that information. I would guess at 1,000, but I really donāt know.
That would add up to 1,800 scholarships spread among 12,000 admitted students.
I wish you and everyone luck in getting a scholarship.
Thank you, sorry about thinking you were rude. Youāre actually very nice thank you.
I do understand the desire to find out about Merit Scholarships. Sadly, only a small percentage of the students applying to UMD are on this forum.
That makes it difficult to provide some of the information that people want.
Yes I understand, thank you for your help.
Does anyone know anything about Freshman Connection/Spring admit? It seems that the only difference is the times that they can take classes during the day. Is there a real disadvantage?
There is no disadvantage, well, they cannot play any D1 sports either. But that is it.
It is only for the first semester, and other students donāt care.
Thanks. Hoping to keep UMD in the running!
My son also applied to CS and was also offered a spot in Letters and Sciences. We were so excited when we first learned that he was accepted, but the excitement was short lived. We quickly realized that Letters and Sciences did not sound like CS at all.
I called UMD to ask if a spot in the CS program is guaranteed, once all requirements are met (required gateway courses are taken and GPA achieved). I was told that the spot is not guaranteed. Though, the chances are high.
I am skeptical. I assume, the only way someone from Letters & Sciences would get accepted in the CS program is if a current CS student leaves or fails - which is hard to bank on.
I am now wondering if my assumption is correct.
Keep in mind that, at this point we are talking about admitted students. UMD historically has a yield of 33%.
ALL the students that were directly admitted to CS are not going to actually enroll and go to UMD, and people do drop out of majors, some flunk out.
Iāve read that about 50% of all freshman, across all Colleges, change majors.
Finally, I donāt think that any University can give guarantees.
So, you also think that the chances are high? But, what if he does what heās supposed to do and still doesnot get into the program, then what? Where does it leave us?
Argh, so nerve racking
I do not know what the chances are. When my D attended UMD, CS was not a LEP.
The big concern back then was Internal Transfers into Engineering and Business.
At the Admitted Students Day that we attended, the emphasized that internal transfers into Engineering was not a problem and they stated just as strongly that internal transfers into Business were VERY competitive.
My Dās BF applied to ChemE, got L&S and did an Internal Transfer into ChemE and is now employed at a Big {Pharme Company in Maryland.
One other source you may want to check is the UMD Reddit forum. I used to follow it in the past, but no longer do. Be advised that you may see some explicit language on that forum, but you should get answers from actual students. Good Luck
Exactly I have similar questions what % of students admitted in L&S get into CS ?
Is there is hard limit on CS class size thatās why they canāt get into CS even after gateway requirements ?
Did you ask is there a hard limit on class size for CS ?
Hi NJCollege2021, I did not ask if there was a hard limit on class size.
@SoofDad Thank you so much for your input. It is much appreciated!
Last Fall UMD had 40 sections (classes) of CMSC 131 with each section accommodating between 20 and 30 students
And youāll notice there were still openings in all but 2 of those CMSC 131 sections. Plenty of openings.
From what Iāve read, students that complete the gateway requirements get into CS.
