Is anyone still waiting on their decision? I had written to UMD on February 2nd asking when I should expect a decision and this is what they said:
'Thank you for your email.
Some students are still under review. It may take up to two weeks to receive an update on your application.
If you have additional questions, please do not hesitate to contact us."
Well, it has now been more than 2 weeks and Iām getting a bit frustrated since this is the only school out of the 17 I had applied to that is taking so long to reply despite giving a timeframe for decisions.
Try calling their office. They are really quick on the helpline.
Also, IF you submitted your application and supporting materials on time, have your guidance counselor call on your behalf.
Anybody who hadnāt heard from them, do not give up!! I kept trying and trying finally got my decision on February 19 (accepted)
We applied ED and got decision today. Accepted
My son was admitted to L& S (applied for CS) and received a $5,000 yearly scholarship. No mention of Honors College offer. Is this a good offer? We are OOS.
From what Iāve read on here and the UMD Reddit forum, internal transfers to CS are not an issue. If you can afford UMD without going into serious debt, Iād say itās a good deal, but itās your decision
How hard is it to get L&S to CS transfers do they have limit of seats in CS ?
As per the requirements maintaining 2.7/C level gpa is easy
Yes, we can afford it. Just wondering if the merit aid is a good offer? Seems like others are not receiving much.
The UMD Reddit forum has a Newly Admitted Terp Megathread where this topic comes up a number of times. Current students, including some who have done the transfer say that it is not too difficult. I have no personal knowledge regarding CS transfers. My D was not in CS and graduated in 2018. I have not read anything to indicate that the transfer process is difficult, unlike Business transfers which are competetive.
It sounds good to me. My D was in the Honors College and did not get any Merit aid
UMD has been perplexing. There have been so many with lesser stats getting more merit money and into the honors program.
So few people receive any merit aid, that even $5k, especially OOS, is considered a great offer.
My daughter is also admitted to Letter and Sciences although she applied for CS major. Not sure if there is a risk going to LTSC at UMD vs. she got an offer from WPI.
Iāll be taking offers where Iāve been admitted to the CS major or where thereās no limited enrollment policy and so I can be a CS major (which are all except UMD). Doesnāt make sense to reject other good offers for a chance to pursue CS at UMD. During the application process Iāve also realized that a public research university might not be a strong fit for the kind of student I am. For these reasons, I personally wonāt be taking the risk.
Any thoughts on UMD vs Lehigh University? My daughter will be an engineering studentā¦ but she will change if itās not a good match. Cost will be about the same and both within our budget. She is wondering about the dominance of the party culture (she is not into that and would like to find others who are not) and the quality of the teaching/education. Any insights would be appreciated.
My D attended UMD 2014-2018. Sometimes she and her friends would go to parties, but it never seemed to be a dominant thing. UMD is a much larger school that Lehigh (30,000 undergrads vs 7,000). UMD often had shows/entertainment at Stamp or the Clarice. And there were trips to DC to visit museums and such. All of the Smithsonian Museums are free. I imagine that things might be different at both schools now due to Covid, but I have no way of knowing. My D got to know several of her professors and was able to get very good recommendations for Grad school applications. She worked at UMD for a year after graduating, prior to enrolling in Grad school, and made the best of all the opportunities she had while at UMD. My Dās boyfriend also went to UMD and is now doing very well as a Chemical Engineer.
Iām sure that both are good schools. but it really comes down to the student. Good luck.
Thank you so much for your helpful reply. Yes, the size is significant difference. She does think UMD as a larger school will offer more options for activities, and chances to meet new people all the time. She likes the small class sizes and individual attention built into Lehigh.
Did your daughter and your daughterās boyfriend find the professors to be wonderful ā both in their teaching ability and availability? You mentioned that your daughter was able to get to know several of her professorsā¦ did this just happen naturally, or is your daughter highly skilled at making connections?
Thanks again for the wonderful information
I donāt recall my D ever referring to any professor as āwonderfulā, nor did she ever refer to any as āterribleā. She has always been very self motivated. When needed, she would talk to her friends and classmates about certain courses or professors, to decide which courses to sign up for. Sometimes, there was no real choice.
My D did got to Professorās offices hours, as a general practice. She also got an unpaid, undergraduate research assistant position starting in her Junior year, which her connections to a few Professors, and Grad students.
My D did like her Faculty Advisor and she did like the Professor who was her Mentor for Departmental Honors. I know that there was one Professor that she had for 2 different courses, who, when he heard that she was back on campus working after graduating, asked her to grade the papers for a Senior Seminar Course that he was teaching (she did this on her own time and was paid for it).
My D and her boyfriend did not meet until the second half of Senior year and I did not really meet him until a few weeks before Graduation and we never talked about Professors at UMD.
UMD has (and I assume still has) a policy where students can withdraw from a class in the first week or two and enroll in another class, even a completely different course, and my D did this a few times, not often, and usually with elective courses.
Between AP credits and taking additional courses, over the standard 15 credits per semester, my D could have graduated in 3 years, but there was no rush ans she used the additional time to finish her Honors thesis and take a few Graduate courses, and other courses of interest.
My whole point is that your daughter will have opportunities at Lehigh, or UMD and it is up to her to take advantage of them. Sometime the opportunities have to be sought out. There were times when my D made decisions, that she did not tell me about until after the fact. I cannot say that any were bad, and some actually surprised me.
Engineering is a tough major. Good Luck
