Another question: Is completing the Residence Hall and Dining agreement, and paying the housing deposit time critical? Most other universities we looked at put a time stamp on when you paid the deposit so that it is first come first serve when picking dorms based on that time stamp. Is UMD this way? My son hasn’t filled out the agreement or paid the deposit yet as he is still deciding.
Back when my D applied, there was no deposit required for Housing, but it seems there is one now. It is probably refundable, if you notify them by some specific date. The ResLife website may have that info.
Also, unless things have changed, Freshmen do not get to pick the dorm that they want. Dorms are assigned based on LLP’s or randomly by ResLife.
I think it is (re: Housing Dep). I am pretty sure I read this on our local listserv, but the thread is 35pp long now, and I can’t find it! But, I think folks advised paying the deposit asap and getting in line for housing selection. It was free in the past. I think it might be partially refundable, but I think not all. You do not have to enroll or commit to the university to do the housing deposit. That much I remember!
Most Honors communities and I think LLCs have their own housing. So, doing the housing deposit to secure a spot in line should not be necessary if you’re in one. (But, someone correct me if I’m wrong about that).
It is true about LLCs, but there is another purpose as well. It lets ResLife know that you want to live on campus as opposed to being a commuter or living off campus.
I think that the biggest benefit of completing the Residence Hall and Dining agreement early is that it will, hopefully, keep your child from being assigned to a forced triple. Since a new residence hall opened in fall of 2021 and another new one either opened spring 2022 or will open in fall of 2022, that should alleviate some of the past issues with overcrowding. Hopefully!
Are all 2022 RD acceptances out for UMD ? D applied in December, haven’t heard back yet.
You’ll receive a decision by April 1st.
I wish you luck - but to future Terrapins, UMD admits 97%+ of the class EA - so make sure you meet the initial deadline. It’s near impossible to get into RD.
OP - someone is getting in - why not you? But in general terms, have to be EA to get in there.
I paid the $50 deposit for the housing and dining agreement, and we had it all filled out, and then came to the last page where it said you need permission to get out of the agreement – and then I was wondering if we were somehow obligated (she hasn’t committed yet), so we held off. Does anyone know if you submit the application, is that a contract to pay for the housing whether you attend or not? It read that way to me, or at the very least, was not clear. I thought I would ask here before I have to get on the phone with admissions to ask.
Hi @UniversityMomma - We paid our $50 housing/dining deposit and submitted our contract last week. Our understanding is that you can cancel the contract anytime before July 1 and not have to pay anything additional. You won’t get your $50 back but that’s it.
Here’s what it says on the ResLife site: “A $50 non-refundable application fee will be required for students (unless granted a fee waiver from Undergraduate Admissions) at the time of applying for residence hall housing. Students may cancel their housing agreement without a financial penalty before July 1, 2022.”
This mirrors what we heard during last week’s Virtual Admitted Student program.
You have to commit (enroll) before you can sign up for housing and dining right? Just want to confirm.
Thanks
No. You can enroll in dining/housing before you commit/enroll. We did!
From the ResLife page: “ Students may submit the Housing Agreement before accepting admission to the University.”
Here’s the link: Apply for Housing | Department of Resident Life | University of Maryland
Thank you so much!
There is no commitment to attend UMD associated with housing form fee. They just want to make sure that they are notified if you choose not to attend.
And even if you didn’t notify them, I suspect that you would maybe get a nasty email and lose the fee.
No. UMD allows you to sign up for housing w/o committing. Check out @KayBee03 's link.
But, if your kid is in an Honors College community, that should come with housing, so I don’t think you need to do the deposit to get in line. (Someone correct me if I am wrong there)/
I see, thanks. Yes my D got accepted to honors.
Thank you so much for the response.! I think we will go ahead and submit. My D22 accepted the invitation up Carillon Communities but there was no place to indicate what LLC she is in. Do you happen to know of they will just assign her to the dorm set aside for that LLC?
Honors college students still need to apply for housing and pay a deposit just like everyone else. They are guaranteed housing but some might choose other options and UMD needs to track this just like with any other student.
Got it. Thanks for clarifying!
At the bottom of the portal, there’s a “checklist” you can click on. The Carillon assignment should be in there.
