UMD Early Action for Fall 2022 Admission

The housing form and meal plan form are not new, UMD has has them for years. The fee is new.

These 2 forms are a tool for managing resources, that’s really all they are.

UMD knows which students are in LLPs and assigns Dorms accordingly. However, there are students who choose to commute, or choose to live off campus.

Submitting these forms should not stress anyone considering enrollment at UMD.

Thank you for the information! We submitted her housing/dining. She is undecided still, but I want to have everything lined up.

Yes, but it’s not a rush to get ahead for better housing like the general pool, right? They have some time to get this in if they are already accepted to the Honors Community, yes?

DD wants to see where else she gets in, and I’d like to save the $50 if possible. Thought we were safe w/ housing for now.

I think that you are probably safe for now. Since you know what dorm she’ll be in based on her honors college, the only risk you have in waiting would be the possibility that she may end up in a forced triple. UMD had been converting doubles to triples and even had converted lounges to dorm rooms for awhile there (not sure how many students were in each converted lounge). The two new dorms should alleviate a lot of the overcrowding, I would think. Even if it doesn’t, the students who my kids knew that were in these situations had waited until the very last minute to complete their housing/dining form.

I have applied to Maryland for early action and didn’t get my decision yet and finally they replied to my email. I don’t understand the reply exactly does any one know what this means?

Thank you for contacting the Office of Undergraduate Admissions.

In addition to the college transcripts, students who have completed fewer than 30 semester or 45 quarter hours at the time of application must request official copies of their high school transcripts from the institutions they’ve attended, listing all courses they have completed.

Where appropriate, include official results and certificates of completion from national secondary school examinations such as GCSE/GCE, CBSE national and regional, CXC/CSEC and WAEC. Transcripts must be sent in the native language with a certified English translation.

Any help would be appreciated.

It sounds like they think you are applying as a transfer student.

Either that or, if you’re a high school student who took classes somewhere other than your high school (e.g., community college), they may be saying they don’t have all your transcripts. I only say that because several posters upthread had issues like that. I think the more likely explanation is what Whatrocks said, but maybe someone working in the office replied with the wrong version of the “missing transcript” stock response.

oh ok thanks a lot

Super helpful. Thanks so much!

During COVID, that was not the case. Are you saying current freshmen are in forced triples?

I don’t know about current freshmen. I do know that it happened while my oldest two were freshmen (in 2014 and 2018). One of my daughter’s closest friends is an RA, and he had forced triples on his hall in 2019 too. That was right before covid hit and everybody was sent home.

Thank you bc that was not happening last year.
I see reslife is posting rates for triples and quads for next year.

I believe the rates posted for triples are for actual triple rooms- not forced triples. I’m pretty sure forced triple rate would be lower. I can also confirm that there were a number of forced triples both in 2018 and 2019. We went ahead recently and paid the housing deposit even though my DS has not committed and is also in a LLP. Very strong likelihood he will commit later this month so trying to cover all our bases.

Ty. I found this explanation of “Flex space” or forced triples.Do not wait until April to ask for housing.

Yep, you are correct. They have always offered triples and quads as an option, but in rooms that were meant to be occupied by 3 or 4 people. The forced triples were rooms meant for 2 that housed 3. Both of my kids knew several people who were in forced triples (and yes, I do believe that they paid a lower rate for those rooms). During my daughter’s first year, there were lounges in her building that were turned into dorm rooms.

We submitted the housing forms before both of my older two committed to UMD. We didn’t need to do that with our youngest, as he made his decision earlier in the process. We just paid his deposit on Monday night, and completed the housing form (and paid that deposit) at the same time.

Earlier in this thread someone else posted about a similar situation. They were missing a transcript for summer school or something like that.

My child was accepted today. Of course this weeks after the other EA students heard and 14 days after I finally got a hold of someone in admissions. (They told me we’d hear in 7 to 10 days.)

UMD claimed they didn’t have the SAT scores. The guy I was talked to was very nice but didn’t know his stuff. He said the institution where the test was taken needs to send the score. I told him that my kid’s high school does not send those out.

I told him the date the scores were sent. Low and behold, the scores were logged in that same day in the beginning of September. They were there the entire time.

Because of the snafu, no merit $$, no special programs like honors. All that stuff was gone. My kid has other offers so they are fine, but I feel UMD was kind of sloppy with a number of applications.

Anyway, if you are interested in UMD, check and triple check to make sure they have your materials. Don’t just look at the first screen that says your app has been submitted. Keep clicking and look at each component.
