Hey guys, I am a sophomore at Mount St. Mary's University looking to transfer to UMD for the Fall 2011 semester as a Junior. I just received a 3.06 gpa for this semester which raises my gpa to a 2.84 career. I am in the honors program here (which is why i received a C+ this year in philosophy and a lower gpa than most other students) and I also play Division I Tennis. I guess it is also crucial to add that I am a Maryland resident. What do you think my chances are of getting into UMD as a transfer student?

The fact that you are a Maryland resident would probably help a bit. Being in an honors program won’t matter that much. Colleges would rather see you get an A in regular philosophy class than a C+ in an honors class. It is good that you play tennis which you can put that on your resume.

At this point, I would say that your chances are not too good but you still have 1 semester to go to improve your GPA.

What school and major are you transferring into?

My brother is also applying as an out of state(NJ) transfer student for fall 2011 to maryland school of business.

thank you for your input on this and your response is very welcome. your opinion seems different from the views of others on the forum who say that a 3.0 is a very reasonable gpa for transfers for maryland residents wanting to transfer to UMD. i have done many EC activities as well and i have played the violin for over 10 years.

I am applying as a transfer student to the University of Maryland College Park.

I am also looking to apply for the Fall 2011 semester as a Junior Transfer student.

Do you think that UMD will look down on my 2.84 gpa?

sorry, here is the link in which others talk about transferring to UMD

http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/university-maryland-college-park/297456-university-maryland-transfer-questions.html

What is your major?
I understand that you want to transfer to UMD colleg park but you apply to school based on your major
Are you trying to transfer to their school of business, architecture, agriculture, etc?

Another aspect is the spot available. Go on to collegeboard and look up university of maryland at college park. Click on the admission tab and scroll all the way to the bottom. They admit more than 50% of transfer students last year and that is a pretty high rate. If you keep reading down in the bottom for additional requirement, the school states that students who have gpa below 3.0 are considered based on space available basis.

My brother who has completed 50+ credits with a 3.8 GPA isn’t even too confident about getting into their school of business.

Again you have 1 more semester to go to improve your GPA.

good luck.

I am currently looking to apply to the School of Business under the Major: International Business. And yes I did see that information about the under 3.0 gpa being space avaible basis. UMD also says that majors arent considered when applying to the school itself, and presently id rather just focus on getting in the school before caring about which major i pick.

I agree that you should focus on getting in first. Just try to do well next semester.

Good luck to you and keep me posted.

and i am also applying early at the march 1st deadline. and thank you for the further insight.

thank you for keeping my hopes up =D

Hey y’all,

So I’m currently a sophomore at Palm Beach Atlantic University, and I’m looking to transfer to UMD for the fall 2011 semester. I’m a kinesiology/exercise science major, and when I started here I was bent on being a physical education major, but that’s changed recently. The exercise science program here isn’t the best, and having been to UMD to visit before, I love the school, and have heard nothing but great things about their program. I currently have a 3.54 gpa, but I’m an out of state resident. I’m concerned about the requirements for UMD’s kinesiology program though, I’m not sure that the classes I’ve taken will fulfill their benchmark requirements and other aspects. One other possible hiccup is I’ve already transferred once, so I’m not sure if that will hurt my chances or not. How are my chances looking?
