Hey all,
Yesterday i was accepted into marylands spring admission, but i am taking the freshman connection so that i am able to dorm and take classes in the fall, just as any other fall applicant would. I plan on majoring in biology and intend on pre-med, but im curious as to how umd’s pre-med program compares. How many students from UMDCP are accepted into a medical school? How many pass their mcats? How well do the teachers prepare the students for the mcat/medical school? If anyone would be able to help me with this i would greatly appreciate it.
How many students from UMDCP are accepted into a medical school?
^^^^ This means nothing. A number wouldn’t tell you ANYTHING.
How many pass their mcats?
^^^ there is no passing or failing of mcat. It’s like the Act/SAT…you get a score…there is no “pass” or “fail” score
How well do the teachers prepare the students for the mcat/medical school? I
^^^^Profs do not prepare students for the MCAT nor med school.
BTW…UM-CP is fine to go to as a bio premed.
I thought only Penn State has the classification of “pre-med”. Premed is not a MAJOR" you take classes that med school require and apply after taking mcat. Biology major will not be more advantageous than Physics Major for example.
Artloverplus,
I know that it is not a major, but many colleges have pre-med/dental/law/vet programs that aid in the transition to med school. Biology is my major.
Mom2collegekids,
I understand all of those answers, but im merely asking on the number accepted from UMD because it offers a useful statistic. It is the same as using a graduation statistic to compare schools. Sure, it doesnt mean you will get in, but a school with 90% of kids who end up going to medical school clearly has a superior program to a school where only 60% are admitted. If that makes any sense. And sure, the mcat doesnt have a pass or fail, but there are standards to get into medical school and i was wondering on whether there were any standards for mcat scores like how people will say “oh a 2000 on the SAT will guarantee admission to most schools” or “1800 is a good bench mark” ect.
OP, UMCP has some of the best pre-health advising in the country. The link below will provide answers to many of your questions.
Also Maryland has some Early Assurance Programs (George Washington is one)

I was also accepted into spring admissions and will be taking classes on the pre-med track with a major of Psychology. Happy to get in but I really wish I could start in the fall. Where else are you applying?
@LiveinMass - You can start in the fall with the Freshman Connection program. On campus housing is available. Check out the following link
@Liveinmass Im taking the freshman connection which allows me to dorm in the fall and take classes in the fall. The only difference between fall admit and spring(freshman connection) admit, is that freshman connection classes start around 3 or 4. and its only for 1 semester.
I also applied to villanova, clemson, university of vermont, unc wilmington(safety), mount st marys university(safety), and vanderbilt(legacy)
Also, i called the admissions office at maryland and was told that it was super competitive this year. The average gpa was a 4.22 W and 29-32 ACT (2014 was an average 50 percentile of 28) so it is a HUGE jump from last year. Be happy you got in at all, its one of the top public universities in the country.
Do pre-med students at CP get any preferential treatment with regard to the University of Maryland School of Medicine? Perhaps they are able to secure internships, are able to take classes toward an MD, etc.
@jezza2015 I am also applying to Clemson, William and Mary and Boston College. Got in to UMASS (safety) Where do you live?
I am wondering if Financial Aid remains the same for Spring admits attending in the fall.
