Umd question!

Hi all- I'm a Long Islander that finished his 11 applications weeks ago, but now I'm considering applying to some new schools in hopes that I can get a better financial aid package.

So my questions are- what are the general requirements for admission? Is an interview required? If so, do they do off-campus interviews?

Is it too late for me to apply- asking this, because if an interview is required, it may be past the deadline to request one.

And lastly, how is the FA at UMD???

Any help would be much appreciated.

It depends on your grades and SAT scores, but generally speaking, only 25% of their acceptances are from OOS, and the competition is especially tough for NJ and NY people because there are so many that apply. The VAST MAJORITY of all admits come from the priority deadline. FA (for OOS) goes completely by the FAFSA guidelines…other than the Banneker/Key scholarship (which I don’t think you’d be considered for because of not applying by the priority deadline), merit aid for OOS students is not generally very good, compared to the tuition $$.

Unfortunately you missed the deadline for merit aid awards (that was Nov. 1-it was also the deadline by which they accept the majority of the class, so competition is stepped up now). Echo astrophysicsmom on finaid (MD isn’t known to be very generous - they do the bare minimum!).

An interview is not required, however. It’s basically a straight grades+SAT+ECs+essays/recs combo (with an emphasis on the grades+SAT, being a large state school). You may still receive some kind of merit if you are an exceptionally strong student, despite missing the deadline.

What do your stats look like? I could let you know if you’re in the range for merit or not.

101.1 GPA weighted/100, SATs are 1360/2060 superscored, but they may have gone up from the Dec test two weeks ago, EC’s are good, and I have lots of volunteer work.

Can I still get merit aid AND be accepted, even with missing the priority deadline AND being in a more competitive applicant pool?

**Need-based aid also carries a lot of weight for me, so would I be eligible?

You are above average for the normal MD admit but I don’t think it’s in the merit aid range (esp. after the priority deadline like this). But I think you’ll definitely get in.

You’ll be eligible for finaid if your parent’s EFC is less than the cost of the school…otherwise they will not give you any  UNLESS you are an URM, they tend to make some exceptions there. But MD is not known for being very generous, again; they may expect you to take out significant loans. I would say private schools generally meet need better.
