My S, a senior in high school, is a direct admit to Smith at UMD and was admitted to LSA at UMICH. However, he did not get preferred admission into Ross. I believe that he would be happy at either school .He definitely wants to major in business and plans to earn his MBA possibly after working for a year or two after graduation. Is Ross so much better than Smith that you'd risk the possibility of not being able to major in business, over the sure thing at UMD in Smith? What are his real chances of getting in to Ross as a Freshman? Any insight would be greatly appreciated.

Objectively speaking, Ross is a much better business school than Smith at UMD. You can search up rankings and everything to back up what I said. Honestly, if you get into LSA and work decently hard, get a pretty good GPA (3.8+) with an A in intro econ and A in calc and have solid essays, you won’t have too hard of a time getting in. A lot of people make it sound like it’s very hard to get in as a freshman, but they take around 30-40% of the students who apply as freshman, which is a pretty significant figure. If your son’s willing to work enough to do that, then I’d pick Michigan. Ultimately, I would also ask to tuition costs or anything else factor in? If so, that might also help make your decision easier.

Thank you for your insight @tachen95. I was wondering if you are a student in Ross. Also, a GPA of 3.8+ is more than “a pretty good” GPA. That requires that a Ross hopeful get straight A’s his freshman year. My S is willing to work hard, but you have to factor in adjusting to college and he plans to pledge a fraternity (which I imagine is very time consuming). There is a significant discrepancy in regard to tuition between the two schools, but he feels torn because of the opportunities he could have if he does get admitted to Ross. It’s a bit of a conundrum, wouldn’t you say?
