UMD Smith vs IU Kelley? - Thoughts

Hi,

I’ll be posting this in the Indiana U discussion thread too. What are your guys’ thoughts on IU Kelley vs UMD Smith?

Here’s some background
IU Kelley:

  • Direct Admit
-$11k Dean’s Scholarship (applying for more)

UMD Smith:

  • In state
  • Did not get into business school, got spring admission so would have to do freshman connection

Both are fantastic schools but I worry about if IU is worth it. Even after scholarship, it’s still $11k more expensive ($37k vs $26k). I am also applying to SSA but it isn’t a guarantee I’ll get more money. With UMD, I didn’t get into Smith and although I think I would get standard admit (I am extremely business oriented with practical business application majority of students don’t have), I’m not sure.

After college, I’d like to live in the D.C. - Maryland area. I am most likely majoring in some combination of entrepreneurship/corporate innovation, marketing, and information systems.

Please give me thoughts on what I should do - thank you!!

@businessgal00 someone else had the same question previously…http://talk.qa.collegeconfidential.com/university-maryland-college-park/2050211-umd-vs-iu-vs-umiami.html#latest

In addition to the advice from @trackmbe3, I would add that Maryland is a top school for entrepreneurship…

My s got into both (with 8k a year scholarship to Kelley) and we are going up to Kelley this weekend and will compare with Md Smith and report back. We are in state Md so price could be a major factor if they are as I suspect pretty close together. Kelley is higher ranked usually but overall Md CP is a better university than IU.

What will be more stressful (but a good problem to have) is if S gets into even better programs like Michigan because I have to say I am in love with MD and IU both are transparent up and comers with students who actually like their schools as opposed to just doing it for their resumes…

Please respond back and let me know what you guys think - I’ll be going to DA day on Feb 10th!

Thank you for the thread link!

@parentbethesda My son and I go to Kelley this weekend. I saw you went last weekend for direct admit day. What did you think?

My son received scholarship to IU and was in state for UMD-Smith. He graduates fro UMD in May, loved his experience ther, and has a great job lined up. However, if he had NOT been direct admit to Smith, I would have encouraged him to think about other options. It’s pretty hard to get accepted to Smith once you’re a UMD student, so if you are sure you want business, think about that. But UMD has lots of great programs - more than IU that rank highly.

Sorry for late relay we loved IU but he got into Maryland smith in state and that’s 20k a year less and IU simply isn’t worth 80k more than Maryland which is a good school in itself
