UMD Students and Parents, New and Old, Chance Me Please?

You guys have become familiar with the UMD admissions process. What do you think of my chances?

Washington DC
Private School
Male
Applying as Freshman
3.0 GPA
2250 SAT (780cr, 760math, 710writing)
34 ACT
4 on AP Spanish 4 on AP Lang Comp 5 on APUSH
All Honors + 7 AP Classes (AP Spanish, AP Lang Comp, AP Lit, APUSH, AP US GOV, AP Bio, AP BC Calc)

Standard EC's nothing amazing.
Assuming good letters of recommendation and good essay.

Thanks!

Scholars, perhaps. That GPA is a problem.

You think I will get in though?

What is your class rank? That might be an important consideration because your test scores are fantastic and don’t seem to match up with your gpa. Did you attend an extremely competetive/difficult high school?

My school does not rank

They don’t weight the classes, either? I think you’ll get in. Make sure you apply by November 1st and put a lot of effort into the short answers, too.

You’ll get in due to your awesome SAT scores (congrats on doing so well!!!), but your GPA will likely keep you out of merit $ contention. If you have a LOT of meaningful community service, Scholars may be a possibility, but if that’s not your strong suit, you may not be invited to that program.

The “assumption” in your case is that you have the intelligence (evidenced by your test scores) but maybe not the drive or the seriousness about applying yourself to your work (the GPA). You may want to address this in your app if your situation can be explained differently.

Thanks! I definitely plan to apply before November 1st, but is there anyway I can have Maryland see my first semester grades? I plan to do really well with a demanding schedule.

You can always send in a new copy of your transcript the the office of admissions after you get your 1st semester grades .
