FEAR THE TURTLE!!!

Can someone who attend University of Maryland. Check out this post http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/discussion/comment/18822169 I want to get an opinion from both sides.

@c0llegegirl So, the answer to a straight ranking questions is that “the biomedical/bioengineering specialty ranked 33rd” (http://www.umdrightnow.umd.edu/university-maryland-rankings compared) to UPitt at 19. Personally, I don’t consider that as significant a difference as the Pitt responder seemed to imply. For the sake of others’ reading this, let me repost your questions as I try to respond…

“Which of these schools is better for biomedical engineering? They are both on my college list and I want to eliminate one of them. Also does anyone know the job placement rate for engineering at each of these schools? I know both of them are expensive and these are not my financial safeties, however does one give better financial aid to low income-students (my parents make 32k/year) or gives out merit scholarships more freely than the other (4.08 GPA, 32 ACT) (I am OOS). Thank you for all the info.”

First off, I would not eliminate either before you even apply. They are both excellent schools, and each have their own merits. Financial aid will be the same at both schools, as they are both state universities and financial aid is determined by your FAFSA. http://www.financialaid.umd.edu

Merit aid is a different animal entirely. At Maryland, as a general rule (of course there are exceptions), the higher your standardized test score, the more likely you are to be considered for merit aid. The single most important factor to be eligible for any merit aid is that you need to apply by the November 1 priority deadline. It is not a commitment, but if you don’t apply by the priority deadline, you simply will not be considered for any merit aid, regardless of your stats. FYI, unless you are in the ivy league range (in which case you could be considered for the Banneker-Key), most merit scholarships are either the Dean’s Scholarship or Presidential Scholarship. As for which is a better school for you, Pitt v Maryland, well, that depends on a lot of things. I would visit the schools and see what each has to offer, and which “feels” better to you…there is no right or wrong answer, and it’s very individual as to what kind of environment you feel most at home in. In the meantime, I would look at the four year curriculum for each and compare apples to apples…which classes that are required do you find more appealing?
Here is the home page for Fischell (the bioengineering at Maryland) http://www.bioe.umd.edu Use this page to check out courses…I don’t know what track you are interested in, so I can’t give you specific page…just scroll to bottom of this one and follow links http://www.bioe.umd.edu/undergraduate

Every year, there is a Fischell Festival (I don’t think they have updated info yet for this year, but it will be soon) http://fischellfestival.umd.edu so that would be a good time to plan a visit. Also of interest is the new building that is set to open in 2017 (note this article is from last year and has the rank at 34 instead of the updated rank of 33) http://www.diamondbackonline.com/news/univ-of-maryland-officials-break-ground-for-bioengineering-building/article_67c38820-7373-11e4-b07c-074c9c15615d.html

Here is the calendar of events just for bioengineering http://www.bioe.umd.edu/events/index.php to give you a sense of the programs that are scheduled.

Engineering programs at Maryland really have a lot to offer. Check out the thread I started to give you some more specifics about what makes Maryland engineering so special. http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/university-maryland-college-park/1732708-everything-you-want-to-know-about-engineering-at-maryland-p1.html

Hope this helps.
