Umd vs udel Business program

Son was admitted to Smith Business School but only got 2k scholarship (oos), he received 7700k from UDel as an engineering admit. Prefers the feel of UDel Campus but was very impressed with admitted student day presentation from the Smith Business School. He is very torn and a bit worried about huge campus at UMD. Does anyone have any input ? He wants to switch from engineering to business at UDel but we know it is not as highly rated as Smith Business School. Help us !!! :)

Bump to the top

My daughter is in a similar position. Right now she is deciding between Fordham Business School, Rutgers Business School, UMD Business and UDel Business. We are in-state for Rutgers so it would be the most affordable. She hasn’t received anything from UMD. We too were most impressed with the UMD Business School presentation. She will be visiting University of Delaware’s Business program in the next two weeks. Was your son impressed with their program?

We haven’t seen or heard much about UD business. I know it is not as highly rated as UMD, Rutgers, or Fordham. My son also got into the Fordham business program but has decided to stay away from the city. We are also from NJ so Rutgers was “too close”. the campus at UD is a really nice size, people were super nice, town a great plus. May. Go for admitted student day this Saturday. So far UD is the most affordable. He got a great scholarship to South Carolina but again decided against a city school. He is so torn. Please let me know if you find out anything about UD business.

My daughter is also sticking to the “too close” rule. We visited Rutgers this past weekend and sat in on the business information forum. She wants to visit Delaware again but said that she needed to schedule an individual tour because the business school was not included in the admitted students day activities. I’m going to call today to find out if we can do it on Saturday. My daughter felt that size wise Delaware felt as if it would be the best fit for her. Again, we don’t know anyone that is or has been in the business program at Delaware. Strange…

First off, Congratulations! Smith School of Business is extremely competitive and many outstanding students do not get directly admitted as freshman. It really is a big deal that your kids were admitted!

I’m the mom of an engineering student at UMD, so I am not the best resource for business, per se, but hope I can help somewhat…

“worried about huge campus at UMD”
Not an uncommon reaction. From the outside looking in, it can seem overwhelming. However, once you are there, it’s really a comfortable size, especially with all the programming to “shrink” the size. Are you familiar with Freshman Fellows?

There are business competitions throughout the year on campus and lots of events to give a broader education that extends beyond the classroom.
There are two career fairs - one each semester and a great career counseling center. They will help you with resumes, interview techniques, etc.

Maryland has an outstanding business program and is a top school for aspiring entrepreneurs. The proximity to DC is incomparable for the potential internships, coops, and networking.

Hopefully others will chime in soon, but hope this helps in the interim…
