Hi guys,
Recently I was accepted into the University of Michigan College of Engineering program. If I do go there, I’ll be doing computer science. However, I didn’t get any financial aid from there and it’s going to be 66k per year. This makes it around 264k for 4 years assuming the price stays the same. I also got into UMD for computer engineering, but I’m going to be switching to CS and the price will only be 16k per year, even less if I commute. I know they both rank very similarly for CS, but UMich has the bigger name and connections. Is the price difference worth it?
No. It’s not worth it. UMD has a great program. Go where it’s affordable.
I totally agree UMD is a great school for Comp Sci. I mean one of the Google co-founders went there! Also with the current economic situation, it might be better to save money.
https://www.lep.umd.edu/computerscience.html#current indicates that you need a 2.7 college GPA to enter or stay in the CS major at Maryland. This should not be that hard if you have decent study skills. You probably want at least a 3.0 college GPA to avoid being screened out of lots of interviews for internships and jobs.
The extra $200k for Michigan does not appear to be worth it.
Maryland is a very good school for CS. Save your money and go there!
