You did it. Out of over 25,000 applications for 2,000 spots in the University of Miami Class of 2014 -- you are among the select students admitted for the fall 2010.

Where did they get these numbers?

No, they’d probably accept 6,000 if they expect a 1/3 yield [as an example] for 2,000 openings [6000/3=2000]. So that would be a 24% acceptance rate.

Numbers from two cycles ago:

Fall 2008 Acceptance rate: 38.6%
Early decision acceptance rate: 22%
Early action acceptance rate: 52%
Acceptance rate (excluding early action and early decision students): 32%

Their yield is around 25%, meaning 25% who get accepted actually enroll. So to get a class of 2,000 freshmen, they need to accept around 8,000. So the acceptance rate is 8,000/25,000=32%. That appears to be a definite decline from last years 44% and 2008’s 38%. If this is true, UM is is becoming very selective.

I was accepted into the class of 2013 my letter said the same thing, except there were 22,000 applicants. UM is becoming much more selective and flying up the rankings (even though they certainly are not that important in selecting a school). And I do believe that UM have somewhere between a 25-33% yield. Miami is definitely getting pretty selective, but definitely not an 8% acceptance rate.
