UMiami or Tulane for Business/Finance

Def a hard decision to make since the two schools are almost the same in terms of my likings. Even their mascots are both forces of nature - Green Wave and Hurricanes. I wanted to get some other people's opinions and output before I make a choice.

I would be studying in the school of business. Most likely Finance since I enjoy math but if I were to switch to something else it would probably be pre-law/legal studies.

Both schools are +/-$500 of each other after everything.

It seems Tulane has a slightly higher level of prestige since its been a well known private school in the South whereas UMiami didn't really get into the semi-high ranks until the 90s. From what I have read, it was a party/commuter-type school in the 80's. I think the USNWR are a load of **** and don't really mean anything to me. To some classmates, they think rankings derived from calculations are everything.

I don't know where would be a better location to study business. Correct me if I am wrong, but everyone I know seems to see New Orleans as a city where a bunch of tourists go see football games, drink and party whereas Miami is somewhat of like that but business goes on in the city.

I would have no doubt either school would meet my academic needs as they look like challenging schools with small class sizes.

However, I did hear personally over the holidays from a family friend who's daughter went there in 08/09 for a year but later transferred to Vandy. He told me most of their star teaching faculty left after Katrina to other colleges and the school has a shortage of profs due to over-enrolling freshman classes for the past couple years and the need to stay true to the tradition of smaller classes. I did take a look at Tulane's schedule of classes. For example: I did see a couple of sections where I did see a class where there were only 2 sections of 60 students and 6 students each on the waitlists. Marketing class of 50 with a waitlist of 19 students. 4th year marketing II class of 45 with a 33 person waitlist!

I would hate to enroll at a school I didn't like then have to waste energy to try to transfer out to another college.

Diversity- Tulane doesn't look like it has any, except for Northeasterners. UMiami looks like it has a lot. I don't really care about things like diversity or should I?

My S is a freshman at U of Miami ( not in the business school). I don’t know much about the business program except that the new dean is from the U of Michigan ( one of the top business schools in the country). I can also tell you that at Miami it is easy to switch between the business school, engineering, arts & sciences, etc if you decide to change your major. There are a lot of northeasterners at Miami, but there are plenty of students from around the US and world as well.

I looked at Tulane too and it is direct admission into the B-school. It also looks easy to switch school to school as well.

tulane is better for business…

Miami is also a direct admit to the business school and as racquetdad pointed out, switching is easy if you want to pursue something else. UMiami has a program you may be interested in if you want to pursue a finance degree.
Nothing beats real world exposure.
