UMiami, Pepperdine or Occidental

Hello!

I am an international student and have been accepted to Pepperdine University, University of Miami, and Occidental college. I am mostly thinking about UMiami, as it is considered to be the best from these schools from every aspect i guess. But maybe someone who knows something more and can compare these schools can give me a little advice!?

Thanks so much in advance!

Occidental is very highly respected around here. Pepperdine - slightly less so in my opinion. Don’t know anything about Miami, though geographically I would much prefer southern California.

Not Pepperdine. Either Oxy or Miami.

Occidental is you want a small liberal arts college experience with more attention from faculty and to be in Los Angeles - Miami is you want the large University experience - Personally I would opt for Oxy. NOT Pepperdine.

What do you mean by- georgrafically I would prefer southern california. Why?

I don’t know anything about the other two schools, but D attends Miami and absolutely loves it! The campus is beautiful, and there is a huge selection of classes and majors/minors, something you don’t always get with a smaller school. There are so many ways to be involved. Social life is great. Academics and advising are superb. California vs. Florida is a personal decision. Coral Gables is awfully nice though. Good luck with your decision.

Florida is hotter and much more humid than California, which has a more tolerable dry heat. Mosquitoes are worse in Florida. California is very beautiful, with diversity of sights, cultures, and types of landscapes. Basically, everyone I know from California who has visited Florida hates Florida because of the heat, humidity, and crowds. But you have to understand that I’m biased, living in California. I’m sure there are many people who would prefer Florida.

I don’t think this decision should be based solely on location. Do you want what a liberal arts college has to offer or what a university has to offer?

I totally agree that the decision should not be based primarily on location. I think that basically it comes down to the question of whether you’d be happier at a large university or a smaller lac.

Happier in large university setting = Miami

Desiring a more intimate lac = Occidental

Ok, thank you guys a lot!
Locationvise, I would prefer California, I loved the climate and every body say it is the best place in the US. But as a university, I would rather prefer UM, because of the social life and the things it can offer. And CA is awfully far away from me, I am from Eastern Europe. But I always wanted to go there for studies… dunno

My S is currently a freshman at Miami. It is not a “large university” setting. There are only 2100 students in the freshman class. I second everything that Dumbo11 says. My son loves it at M.

UMiami sounds like a good choice for you. You will have a wonderful experience. Best wishes to you!
