UMich '14 - how will the cookie crumble (ALREADY APPLIED)

Michigan definitely does care about GPA more than test scores, however if your school is really competitive they will cut you a little slack. But it’s very true that certain grades mean different things at different schools, which is why they look at test scores too.

Sam and Ron, here’s what I think based on my experiences…

They definitely look at your course rigor, and what type of school you go to. U of M expects everyone to take rigorous classes. Going to a math and science magnet school will significantly boost your chances (I go to one as well, and out of 47ish who applied to U of M, 43 were accepted). However, you need to have a high GPA along with that, and the people rejected from my school were rejected because of low GPA’s.

Going to the magnet school will help the OP, but, unfortunately, I think a 3.1 is too low. You’re obviously really smart though, and if you go to an extremely hard school where a 3.1 is average or above average, then you’ll be fine. I really hope you get accepted Srrinath…good luck!

Yeah, I don’t go to a magnet school but I made the best out of what I did have and have pretty good test scores…

I hope the OP gets accepted because they deserve to, but international is really competitive

Yeah I agree yosup, I go to a competitive public school in ann arbor, around 100 kids get into michigan a year.

Does your school tell you who gets accepted and rejected into the college…I know that 5 or 6 from my school got in last year, but don’t know how many got rejected because its a pretty touchy subject lol

They don’t tell us who get’s rejected, but they give us numbers of different schools.

Yeah my counselor said about a third of the students applied last year and half got in… not very precise though so I’m not exactly sure. It would probably be a big higher but I think we most likely have a lot pretty unqualified people applying since everyone grew up a michigan fan and wants to go to school here.

I know, its funny when a lot of my friends have like a 2.9 taking basic classes with a few AP’s mixed in… They all think they’ll walk right into Michigan because “my essay will be a sob story”

lol

Haha yeah…if you’re gonna take easy classes at least do well in them lol

but his cousins in a fraternity there, lol

Oh well never mind he could fail all of his classes no worries

Haha…guess what he want to be?

A doctor, lol

That’s what scares me haha people like that could be my doctor someday

Haha, hes one of those kids that think they will turn a switch on in college…Hes going to central michigan most likely though

Some people actually do turn the switch on. One of my mom’s colleagues went to Scraft… and then transferred and got admitted to wsu med. school and is now a practicing physician.

I’d say reach, but its possible due to the recalculated GPA

Thanks for all the chances.

Anyway:

Don’t worry, med school is a rigorous check and balance system that doesn’t let slackers or incapable people through. But give the guy a chance. As a person who has done badly at some point, I know that the worst thing about it is when everyone around you loses belief.
