UMich and Alcohol

How does the university/police deal with students who have consumed some alcohol? I've heard of MIP's but is there any kind of a warning given to the student by the police or if they figure out you have had some drinks they MIP you?

Just asking because I know getting something like and MIP can adversely effect an application to Ross.

How would you recommend dealing with something like this? Just not be stupid about it?

Don’t drink Alcohol. Anyways are you applying to Ross your sophomore years? how can you drink then? or are you talking about Ross MBA?

Yea, don’t be stupid. It’s fairly easy not to get an MIP. It depends on the cop you get in terms of whether you get an MIP; I’ve heard of warnings before, but more often than not there’s no warning. I don’t think an MIP would hurt your Ross acceptance, as long as you speak remorsefully about it in your application. It’s not like you’ve stolen a car or committed assault and battery. Everyone drinks. If you’re a great candidate, they won’t reject you for an MIP.

It’s pretty hard to get an MIP at Michigan, the cops are generally very friendly and they understand that Michigan students are well educated and are responsible when partying. As giants92 said, you have to TRY to get an MIP because it’s easy not to get one. I’ve seen people who are clearly underage playing beer pong outside and cops drive by and have not done anything. You have to be obnoxiously drunk and probably provoke a cop or someone from DPS to get an MIP.

Good deal. thanks.

That’s not necessarily true. It’s not “trying” to get an MIP, it’s being careless. Being careless does not equal trying. Don’t be belligerent in public, don’t be loud in the dorms while drinking, etc. Just use common sense (which is easier said than done sometimes when you’re drunk, but not difficult).

Dont listen to people who party once a semester. It’s easy for them not to get MIPs. As for the rest and majority of UM and especially the freshmen, it is very very very easy to get an MIP. Looking or smelling drunk is grounds for probable cause under Michigan law. I haven’t gotten an MIP but I have hhad several close encounters. My first was during welcome week freshman year. We weren’t even loud but an RA heard a bottle clang and reported us. Luckily the cops were understanding. The second was when my friend was completely drunk outside. A cop saw us and started to help but he was going to give me an MIP also. I had 2 cups of beer but he could “smell it on my breath”. I ran and got away. My friend wasn’t so lucky. He ended up hospitalized. These laws make students reluctant to contact the proper authorities when it is definstly necessary. In short, UM police are very serious about dishing out MIPs. A hefty percentage of freshmen get them. It’s considered the norm amongst many circles. Be especially careful during welcome week. My gf got one in front of east quad by an undercover officer.

“Don’t listen to people who party once a semester.”

Riiiight… good one.

Well all that just sucks for you. ~99% of the people I know have had fairly little trouble avoiding an MIP in 2 two years of drinking, I’d say on average, 2-3 times a week.

Yeah, a lot of freshmen get them. But in most of the stories I’ve heard, there were multiple ways to greatly reduce the probability that they were going to get caught before the fact. A lot of freshmen don’t take necessary precautions because they don’t think it will happen to them.

I’ve been here 3 years and I’ve never gotten an MIP. Just be smart. Most freshman come on campus, go crazy, and before they know it a police officer is writing them up for playing friggin beer pong in their friggin dorm.

police come into dorms?!!!? ***?

^

Door was probably open

No lol. They knock until the person stupidly opens the door because they don’t know their rights. Just don’t give reason to believe you had one. I remember seeing one poor kid throwing up in the hallway because he had food poising. The first thing DPS said to them was ‘how much did u have to drink?’. It’s bad haha

To avoid getting an MIP freshman year, there are some basic rules.

Basic party rules:
No alcohol containers on/past the sidewalk anywhere in Ann Arbor. Applies even at 21.
Don’t get so drunk that you pass out and require medical attention. Applies at 21.

Dorm rules: Don’t be loud at night in the dorms during quiet hours. You can drink in the dorms, just don’t start to scream, sing ‘Sweet Caroline,’ play beer pong with your door open, have 10 people in your room drinking, etc. Just have some common sense…if a couple people want to quietly pregame in a dorm room, DPS are not going to look for you and knock on your door. Just don’t make a ton of noise late at night and you will never have a problem.

Unless you barf on the street coming back from a party, in a cop’s plain view, you are not going to get an MIP. Don’t worry about it.
