Hey everyone!
I’m just wondering if anyone (who has already auditioned here last year or this year) could give some audition feedback/experiences…would be much appreciated…thanks!

bump- any audition experiences yet this year?

My S is auditioning on Jan. 19. We'll post when we return.

Hi JohnsMom - My D and I will be there on the 19th as well...perhaps we'll see each other....not sure what we parents will be doing that day anyway.

MikksMom

To parents - last year I had the nicest visit with some of the parents in the coffee shop after they took the students to another building for dance audition. I recommend that you reach out to each other.

Hi Mikksmom,

We are thinking about arriving on the night of the 17th so that my S can sit in on a class or 2. When are you arriving? We are currently scheduled to arrive in Detroit on the 18th at 2:30pm, but, since my S will already miss the entire day of school that day, we thought that we might as well leave the night before so that he can sit in on some classes.

We are also trying to figure out if we can make a 6:30pm flight in Detroit on the 19th if his piano placement exam is at 3:20pm. Do you think that we can make it?

My son auditioned on 1/12. About 45 students auditioned for MT- approximately 15 were boys (according to my son and his estimate; might not be accurate!) The day went smoothly- super-organized. We took the bus from Central Campus to the Music building afer the dance audition as recommended instead of moving the car; this was easy. The only thing I wish I'd known was that they had (free) sandwiches, beverages and fruit available for a light lunch in the lobby of the music building; we were pressed for time and had hurriedly crammed down lunch in a coffee shop on Central Campus before we caught the bus. Everyone was very nice and the program impressive, of course. My son was finished shortly after three but others were scheduled later. They said applicants could expect to hear a yes, no or maybe (I think they called it a "delayed decision") in about four weeks. They said that they have over 500 students invited to audition this year. Any other questions, feel free to ask or PM me.

Just wanted to update - our experience was almost as nice as BreatheEasy. Very well organized day. They were ahead of schedule and we were done by 3:15 (even though her last audition was scheduled for 3:25). We did drive from Central to North Campus- there was parking. Central parking in the morning was a challenge - visitor parking is in the Palmer Garage around the block from the theater. Driving to North meant we ate off campus at Zoups which was superb!!

The day went well. There were around 45 auditioning - around 18 guys I think. It is a great program with a wonderful philosophy! They say 3-4 weeks for notification. Also, total cost of attendance is expected at 41K.

We also sent several folks to CC for advice and help! This forum rocks!

Best wishes to all and I can't wait until we hear!!

Hi, My d went to audition on 1/19. She flew there alone and stayed with her cousin who is a soph. Our D felt that everyone was nice and it was well organized. She thought there were approx 40 students - 17 guys and the rest girls. She took bus system aournd campus and found it to be very easy. Of course like everyone else, the more she heard the more she LOVED the school. Since we were not there we did not go to the info session where I guess they spoke about notification, fees etc. No matter what happens I know these kids all worked very hard to get where they are and that they should feel very proud. Best wishes to everyone and of course we hope all will have the opportunity to follow his/her passion!

good luck to everybody auditioning at unifieds!!!

how long is everyone's piano piece?

anyone auditioning tomorrow (feb 9) ?

If so, could you post what you heard (or even just THAT you heard)? Thx

Just got back from my audition on friday. I actually had fun doing it. Dance is a center barr and then a combo from on the town that they have been doing for years. I got complimented on my song selection which put me at ease and all the students I met were really nice. It was a good experience. The director of the program complimented my song choices which boosted my confidence. Also, when he was talking to us in the morning he emphasized that you don't have to be a triple threat which I found really interesting. He put you at ease as to how hard it is to get in lol.

thats great babygiraffeboots!...and replying to above, i dont think anybody is going to hear fro umich until March. When we were there brent had said that they do not like to admit people early, because that gives less spots for the other people which have to audition...so he said they preferred to wait until everybody had auditioned to make their decision...from the previous auditions, they might have a good idea, but the final decision wont be amde until they have seen everybody..which makes sense...and the last audition date for Umich is March 3rd...so probably the end of march im guessing....which is longg from now :-(

actually the last audition isn't unil the 30th. They said they send out the initial yes/no/maybe letter 3-4 weeks after the audition and then everything else is sent out around the usual april 1st.

oh, my mistake, i thought it was the 3rd of march, cause thats what i saw on the website....

Hi - Just to clarify - UMich has actually made some admittance decisions already - although I'm sure many more will be made in March. They have made some "yes" phone calls and have also sent out some rejection letters. These yes/no decisions seem to have come about three weeks after the audition date. Some people who auditioned a month ago, however, are still waiting to hear....

Michigan works hardest of the selective schools to lower the anxiety surrounding auditions, from our experience so far. It stands in stark contrast to the experience of S's classmates who have also auditioned at CCM, for example. Mich auditors and current students went out of their way to make applicants feel good about themselves and convey well that the choice works both ways---students need to look for a good fit, not just hope to be chosen. That said, there were 60 kids at Friday's audition, 12 of them boys. Dance audition was crowded. Organization of the acting, singing and piano appointments went very smoothly. Info session with admissions director was helpful as was the orientation session by current seniors and program head, Brent Wagner. An important takeaway from his comments seemed to be: all MT students, regardless of eventual college, should make sure they can play piano and read music. He stated it is going to be very important throughout the person's career (not to be a proficient accompanist/performer, just to be very comfortable reading music). S was given positive feedback in his sessions so we just have to wait for one of the 3 outcomes: "yes," "no," or "maybe." We were told that in 3-4 weeks, notification will be made to this 2/9 group. A few "yes" letters/calls, some turn-downs (they feel it's better to let people know so they can update their plans), and some waitlisted. The last group is the group from which they will select their final choices once they have completed all auditions to fill the slots remaining (20 in total...admitting about 22-23 to achieve the 20). The numbers are daunting but their supportive treatment took away some of the sting of that reality!

I agree with kedstuff, everyone was so supportive and friendly. The students monitoring auditions really tried to put everyone at ease. You didn't feel that the school was selective as it is. The dance audition was crazy, but the 60 off us all managed to squeeze in, and for some reason most of the boys were at the end of the aplphabet and ended up dancing together.
