essays were good recs were solid, in state rural school, early acion/decision, chances?

you have a decent shot. i’d say if you can write some pretty outstanding essays then you’ll get in. however, without the essays, you’re a reject.

^^^ that’s not true. It depends how much they weigh your GPA as compared to your great ACT and other factors. You’re not an outright reject, I’d say.

When U of M means “weighted” they mean by context of your school, not comparing to students from other schools. It doesn’t make sense to compare a weighted GPA of 4.2 at school A with an unweighted GPA of 3.7 at school B.

So if rmmuzz’s school average weighted gpa is not much higher than 3.2, he might have a good chance at getting in

A 3.2 is definitely a reach, but others have done it. A higher ACT would make it less of a reach as it would overturn the GPA a bit, but your course rigor and ECs are pretty good. Either way, it’s a reach, but your rank and trend in grades would help determine how difficult it’ll be. Don’t give up though, worst case you’ll be deferred and then your senior grades can improve your outlook. Remember though, that in the end, none of us know, and it’s only the office of admissions that knows.

A 3.2 isn’t very good. I chance people based on what I have seen the past two admission cycles: 2012 and 2013. Umich places a huge value on GPA and a 3.2 isn’t going to cut it. 3.8+/30+/tough courseload to be a match.

Really? Those are your requirements for a match? I mean, I know you have experience being on CC and seeing the stats that come here, but you’ve gotta take into consideration that people with higher stats and who care about their college education are the kinds of students who contribute to these forums. Your chancing can’t be so affected by group polarization.

If a 3.8+, a 30+ ACT and a tough course load is a match, then who the heck is a safety? Because their middle 50% for ACT scores is a 27-31, and their middle GPA is a 3.7-4.0. But by your standards, a 27 and a 3.7 would be a reach, when the statistics would call them a match, assuming their coursework was difficult. On top of that, if that student is in-state, which is over 70% of the University’s incoming Freshman, they’ve got an even better shot, especially considering that they have in-state quotas to fill. I’m not trying to challenge your opinion; I think it’s good to have people out there to be more harsh, as some admissions officers might be. But I would question some of the statistics you use to develop your answer.

I’m pretty sure that middle 50 for GPA is a 3.8-4.0.?
A safety is a 3.9+/32+ and there are plenty of those kind of students.
I don’t know, I’ve been chancing on this forum for more than a year now, and that’s just how I see it. The University of Michigan is a very good school. Admission here is tough and GPA is very heavily weighted so naturally a 3.2 will be a Reach.
