My high school experience has been on the unconventional side, so I’m looking for a fresh set of eyes on what I’ve got so far:
Freshman Sem 1 (at K12 International Academy, an online private high school), 4.0 unweighted GPA:
Psychology
Earth Science
Algebra I
Comprehensive Literary Analysis and Composition I
World History
French I
Freshman Sem 2, 4.0 unweighted GPA:
Health Science
Earth Science
Algebra I
Honors Lit Analysis and Composition I
Honors World History
French I
I’ve been home schooled for most of my life, and I tried an online high school for a year to see how I liked it. For my sophomore year, I decided I wanted to be a dual-enrolled community college student, so I went back to home-schooling to fulfill prerequisites my school didn’t offer.
Sophomore Sem 1 and 2 (home schooled), 4.0 unweighted GPA for both semesters:
French II
Advanced Biology
Advanced Geometry
Advanced U.S. History
P.E.
Advanced Lit Analysis and Composition II
I just finished my first semester at community college as a dual enrolled student, and I took these classes (got a 4.0 at community college as well):
Sociology
Astronomy (super rigorous chemistry- and physics-based course, by the way, not like a typical survey course)
Math Literacy (prereq for Statistics)
English Composition I
CC classes for next semester:
Intro to Psychology
Environmental Science
Statistics
English Composition II
I’ve been continuing French and taking Algebra II at home while at CC. I plan on taking summer classes and doing my senior year at CC as well, taking classes like World Religions, Creative Writing, General Chemistry I & II, and probably upper-level bio or organic chem courses, maybe some humanities too. The classes I’ve taken at CC are specifically designed to meet the Michigan Transfer Agreement so I can transfer these courses over when I’m done (I didn’t just take English Comp again because I felt like it). At this rate, I’ll have my associate’s degree before I have my GED. In Michigan, I will still apply as a freshman and not a transfer student, but will have hopefully at least a little more credits fulfilled than a freshman.
I’m taking the SAT in the spring, so no scores yet!
Extracurriculars:
At K12, from August 2014-June 2015: French Club (founding member), Student Council (founding member), Model UN (representing Germany)
-Library volunteer since July 2015
-Teen LEAD (Leadership, Enrichment, And Development) since September 2015: Teen Advisory Board & Volunteer Program at the library (I’ve lost count of my volunteer hours here; my boss will have them. It’s a lot.)
-Part-time job at a local retail store/bakery since May 2016. working about 12-24 hours/week
-Assistant Summer Camp Counselor at a science institute, Cranbrook Institute of Science, from July-August 2016. It’s a pretty renowned place here (did you know Mitt Romney, of all people, went to high school at Cranbrook?). I got over 60 volunteer hours this summer and plan on going back next summer (would have gotten more if I didn’t also have a part-time job!)
-Psychology club at community college since September 2016
I also am joining the Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society and the Feminist Union at my community college next semester.
Aside from all that, I’m a white female Michigan resident, I’m probably going to major in neuroscience and want to go to grad school one day, and I enjoy baking, reading, and playing guitar
What do you think so far? I know a lot of it depends on my SAT scores, but how am I doing as of now? I’ve always marched to the beat of my own drum when it comes to academics and rejected the confines of a traditional school system, so I’m not sure if that will hurt my chances. But the 4.0 GPA must help, right?
Thanks for reading this manifesto of mine!
