I am applying to the University of Michigan LSA as early action, and I was hoping you guys could chance me. It is my first choice school. I’m mainly concerned about my GPA, though there is a rapid upward trend (3.6, 3.8, 4.0 - W).
SAT: 1400
ACT: 30
UW GPA: 3.67, should improve by next year (Weighted 3.77)
AP Tests: 3 on AP US History and AP Macroeconomics, 4 on AP Computer Science Principles
Senior Year Course Load: 5 AP's - (AP Gov, AP Lang, AP Stats, AP Calc, AP Psych)
Hooks: Will be a young college freshman at 15, A+ Cert, Went to career/technical school in 4nd grade - college level,
Rigorous accelerated test-based high school for half the day - I will be sure to emphasize these points to make up for my
low GPA freshman year.
If you need anything else, please ask me.
Thanks so much!
You do have a valid concern on your GPA as it is considered the most important factor there. Besides GPA, your test score is at or below the 25th percentile. Even you are in state and the admission rate is around 45% for in state, your chance is much below average applicant due to relatively weak stat. Nevertheless, you do have a good chance for other in state schools and many good colleges. If you really want to go to UMich, you may consider transferring afterward.
It does seem like it will be tough, but I will get my GPA up first semester of senior year and emphasize my hooks in the application. Thanks for the advice.
You don’t have hooks. Entering college early is not a hook. It can actually be a disadvantage because the adcom may have concerns about your maturity at 15. You may consider having your public high school pay for college for you for a few years via an early college program or CC.
Students who are minors are a headache for universities. Your infancy makes you a liability. Don’t emphasize it…hide it. I, too, think your GPA is too low to be competitive
My advice: find out what classes will transfer for your intended major and go to community college for a year or two. Apply to UMich at 17 with key weeder classes done and a 4.0gpa at community college. Take the SATs again. I think if you do this, you’ll be an easy transfer acceptance.
I don’t think your upward trend is going to save you. Doesn’t hurt to apply, though.
